Hazing incident = Mass Hysteria

Definition:

Mass hysteria is a form of groupthink, in which several people with something in common begin to think in the same way. In mass hysteria, the group members all develop a common fear that often spirals into a panic. The group members feed off each other's emotional reactions, causing the panic to escalate.

I believe this is what is happening or about to happen with hazing and all hidden incidents....Mass Hysteria...What do you all think?

  • Yeap!

I think this is a prime example of what is needed. Marching Bands during these days have contracts, we sign them. Our band directors and staff members discuss with us the rights and wrongs. I think now we need to go a step further and have workshops.

    Workshops need to include:

    1) What is HAZING

    2) Preventions

    3) Consequence from both individuals involved

    4) Results

    5) Examples (I perfer videos of incedents from various schools)

    6) ...

Also LAST MESSAGE YOU COME TO COLLEGE TO LEARN...(EDUCATION!)

LETS NOT KILL OUR BELOVED HBCU LETS BUILD IT UP FOR WHAT OUR FOUNDERS BELIEVED, DIED, AND LIVED FOR. OUR DREAMS SHALL CONTINUE!

  • Thats like all of the workshops that police departments implement for racially insensitive police officers. Just a bunch of whitewash for the public & media. Things will die down for a short period of time and it'll be back to business as usual.

A majority of the crime stories I read include a lengthy timeline of identical offenses. I'll bet my bottom dollar a fresh hazing story will come from the same schools in about 2 years.

  • Workshop? Like people are really going to listen. The band directors just need to put their foot down and let the band members know their roll, plain and simple. If the band director has to stop outside infleunce around then so be it.

  • So you don't think band directors haven't done that??? I really hope you not that one-minded. I can bet you every band director has put their foot down and has discussed this with their band especially in the recent years. If its a workshop, contract, or just plain on talking to them at least its a step forward.

The reason the workshop is neccesary and a great tool is because its organized by the University and also hey the local police dept. At least the band director can say these grown men and women have been warned, signed a contract, and now they are responsible on both parts if they decide to take part in any of these HAZING CRIMES.

A WORKSHOP WILL COVER ALL BASES. Now if the individuals who continue it will be on them, not the University at large, and not the band director.

    JUST MY OPINION.

  • We as insideers Know what goes on, so this Breaks our normal train of thought.  The News Media are are only reporting what they're getting from other from members, and are asking for comentary from Greeks who don't undertand band life so being that they don't fully understand their opinions are going to be 100% against The band as a whole, rather  than the situation itself.

No need to condemn a whole system of bands for the actions of a few people.

  • What'll make it work is getting to the freshmen early...and not just the directors! They need student examples...and an officer present. Honestly this is how it is- directors talk about not hazing, then the students come in...the ones who do haze come in and peer pressure them, and nobody says anything. Is that really effective?

It won't change until programs stop takin a minimal approach to the issues.
