How do you think people will think about HBCU band programs after the recent hazing events have come to light. Do yoy think more kids will leave the schools, parents not allowing their kids to go to these type of schools, or programs being more stricter. Band is a major part of college life. Many people live for the band so I'm wornding how will band programs be effected.

  • As an educator and former BCC band member, I feel that this incident should serve as a wakeup call to all parents and students.  While the focus is on HBCU's, hazing happens at the white schools also, it's just that those schools have the resources to cover it up unless someone digs deep.  Pledging has gone on for decades and will continue, be it fraternity and/or band and even in the corporate world to some degree.  This incident is a reflection of this generations so-called mantra of I"M HARD.  Parents need/should educate their kids and by doing so help them develop their own self-worth.  Sadly, it seems a lot of parents don't know their own self-worth, thereby causing these kids to seek guidance from others who perpetuate this fake a#$z hardcore mentality.  The individuals who participated in this should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  IS IT THAT SERIOUS? I think not.  Looking forward to hearing others views and perhaps engaging in meaningful discussion.  ALL HAIL BCU WILDCATS.

  • For parents who aren't already privvy to this culture, it will put a huge dark cloud over it. However, in most cases, a parent who's child is intending on marching in anybody's college band should have already been familiar with a bit of the culture (Not so much the hazing aspect, but the long practice hours, the conditioning, the disciplining). More kids aren't going to leave these schools because they've either witnessed actions that may be considered "hazing" to some and not to others, or for the simple fact that a program doesn't "haze". It is the parents job to educate their child beyond the propaganda that has started because of the FAMU hazing incident. It is also up to the student to educate themselves and use common sense. If this may injure me, im not going to condone it, plain and simple. The programs already have strict laws, but what is done in the dark doesn't always come to the forefront.

The only effects I see coming directly from this situation is that people will keep a close eye on the extra activity that some programs or orgs in the band participate in. I can tell you that at FVSU, before the season even started, every year since ive been there the police has come and spoken to the band about hazing (and how quick they are to throw you in jail down there lol) So .... for programs that already addressed hazing issues and haven't dealt with any problems, they will continue to run ship the way they have been. But for the orgs who have been caught over the last few years due to whatever reason, they are going to put a tighter hold on the students and orgs in my eyes....
