HBCU Bowl Analysis

Alright so here's my take on the HBCU Bowl earlier today...

Bama State was there first. Grambling didn't come in till about 2 o'clock (when the game was suppose to start...smh)....

Bama blew neck and a couple of other songs while Grambling warmed up most of the first quarter...  Both bands sounded pretty decent in the stands, Bama with a slight edge cause of the intensity (and some of their arrangements were just overall better)

Halftime - Both bands did great. Grambling ACTUALLY sounded better than Bama on the field, but Bama had the crowd more into their show, and the crowd went crazy for the Honey Bees (i'm kinda over that whole gimmick now)

I left midway through the 4th so I'm not sure if they had a fifth.

Bama State Mello army fanfare was......eh.......thin....

BTone Fanfare was........loud??

the trombone fanfare sounded good and the train chord was louder than i expected.

The tubas went back and forth the whole game.

Overall good showing by both bands, but I say Bama got the W in the end.

  • Who's going to go to an HBCU Bowl game a week before Christmas? For one, many band directors don't want to keep their students on campus that long and students don't want to stay. Usually the band is the first organization on campus and the last to leave so many are ready to go home for the break. They need to move the HBCU Bowl game to mid January, the attendance will be better. Have it around pay day, around the 15th and also that's tax season. You have to be smart when you throw events like that, even though the main purpose for having it is to allow NFL scouts to come to watch HBCU players but you can build this event to something big.

  • I haven't seen Grambling in person since 2003 when they came to Honda. Saw them on yesterday in the Georgia Dome and i must say they sound mighty good, they are very balanced and they play as a band. I'm so tired of seeing fat girls getting bands crowd response, it's a cop out to me. Gramblings field show was clean and the sound on the field was very nice. They have stepped their precision drilling game up a lot i've noticed. Seem as if Bama State is only trying to show how loud they are. They have some clean moments but most of the time it;s about being loud from what i witnessed on yesterday. I will call the battle a draw, ASU has the intensity and Grambling was clean and balanced and played some good music. Just being loud doesn't constitute a win, especially not in Atlanta.
