HBCU Music Education Programs and Praxis II

Greetings Everyone,

 

My name is Tomisha Brock, and I'm currently finishing my Master of Music degree in Music Education at Norfolk State University. I'm working to finish my thesis entitled, "Historically Black College and University Music Education Programs: Increasing the Success of Teacher Candidates on the Praxis II Assessments." The purpose of my thesis is to find out why so many music education majors at HBCUs are failing the Praxis II Music Subject Assessments (0113- Music: Content Knowledge, 0111- Music: Concepts and Processes, and 0112- Music: Analysis) on the first attempt. My research will offer invaluable information on why students are failing and some best practices to increase the passage rate on these assessments.

 

I am writing to ask if you would participate in my research by completing a survey or a few brief interview questions.  If you are a current music education major, or a music major with thoughts of possibly getting certified to teach, or if you are a recent graduate or teacher on a provisional license because you have not passed the test, please contact me if you would like to participate in my research.  Responses will be anonymous, as only first names will be used, and in most instances no names will be used.  Data collected will solely be used for the purpose of this study.  Note: You must be a current student or a graduate of an HBCU to participate in this study.

    Thanx. Headed home now to get my study on. I will say each time iva takn it my score has gone up. Last time I took it I was 2 pts frm where I needed to b. Im a lil nervous but feel prtty confident this time around. Thanks again.

    Many aren't passing the Content Knowledge portion because of how some schools set up the Music Education curriculum, students do not have to take Vocal/Choral Methods which is an area that has questions and listening sessions on the Praxis concerning it.  Brasswind, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion Methods class last only for 1 semester when other colleges, particularly PWC's make you take method classes for an entire 2 semesters so you learn more in depth about the area/instrument. Those are some problems that are plaguing HBCU music education majors to not pass the Praxis. I have always wondered why isn't a Music Content Knowledge preparation class offered just like they offer courses to prepare you for Praxis 1 and Praxis 3 tests. People would do much better on the Content Knowledge it that happened because you could focus more on the Music Content Knowledge Test and maybe things that you didn't get in your other music courses, maybe the Music Content Knowledge Preparations class could take up the slack and teach you the things that other teachers looked over. You can't wait until the week to study for the test either that's a big problem that many are doing and it prevents them to pass the test. I went to the MENC website, purchased some music content knowledge cards that had information that i have never seen and it helped me a lot on the test. You have to go the extra mile sometimes to get prepared because a lot of the content on the test isn't taught in class.

    I agree totally with your response...as a lot of what you said was listed as some of  my hypotheses anyway.   Thanks for the reply, as you have definitely helped to enhance the third chapter of my thesis.....

    I would like to participate, but it looks like I don't fit the criteria. I am a graduate of an HBCU, but I passed the test on my first try. Would maybe detailing some of my strategies help?
