Okay,So I've been putting this off for quite some time, but I have a compose an original piece showcasing my skills on snare. I don't have a problem sightreading, but this would be my first piece of music that i've written myself. I NEED HELP AND ADVICE! Please.... This piece has to be down pat by the middle of February.

All i can say is be creative, try sampling a little from some old school songs and mix a little new school with it
I can't tell you what songs to choose cause i don't play drums, BUT I HOPE THIS INFO WAS USEFULL
Are you writing music for a snare solo or for an ensemble that features things BY the snare? I'll assume for snare solo. I'd start with the rudiments FIRST then. I do NOT play percussion but musically there are things that are standard, advanced and highly advanced. Take rudiments that are simple first. Begin with a melody similar to your rudiments from simplest to more advanced. Don't COPY the rudiment, use the basics of the rudiment to form your melody. Incorporate rim shots and different areas of the drum that create different sounds vs. a traditional sound. Incorporate rests during which you might even change the tuning of the snare and resume playing.
