by not backing down from either of them, and getting a style and sticking to it , not changing every year,,they don't have to have the power of SU or j-st but their arrangements have to be on par with them
I couldn't have said it any better juke...... That's actually all you need to do believe it or not, except ill add one thing. Consistency. If your band is consistently performing well, (standards may vary sadly) people will notice.
Get an identity that works well for your band and hold true to form. The thing with JSU and SU is they do what they do, and both bands do it well. You know what you're going to get from them, and they bring It. They bring it and make you like it. Find a style, develop it, and stick to it. You can't try to do what other bands are doing. You have to find what your program does best and master it. Be true to thine self whatever the style or identity is!
So SU and JSU are the messiah of bands? Bands should focus on outdoing previous bands in their own program, when that happens most bands stay afloat when it's not done there is trouble! If you focus on what JSU or SU do you will lose every time because they don't focus on no one but their own program, that's why they are successful!
1) Bringing your "A" game at ALL times no matter the situation
2) Staying consistant (with numbers, music selection, excitement throughout the years)
3) Keeping with Tradition
(If you are known for playing a certain song after fight song ex. AAMU LOVELY DAY, JSU Marching up the ramp and playing GET READY, SU Formation of the Score during halftime/ Great ball of Sound)
4) Focus on your own style (If you are known more for playing rap and the latest new school stuff, oldies, or jazz tunes) At the sametime be open to a wide range of genera.
5) CHANGE it up, be different. TRAVEL go to BOTB, AWAY games.
...) O' yea for some reason posting good clips of your band on youtube or Bandhead, etc... (advertisement) iguess
