Honesty ( that definition may vary from soul to soul ) & Show What Music Can Do For Them As A Person First & Foremost. Then Bring Forth Examples With Film's Because Todays' Media Is Much More POWERFUL Than Ever !!!! But Like Countless Professionals Are Grappling With The Same Thought. Especially If Your District(s) Are Not Funding Like Others. Music Is Life. And Life Is Music . Ya Dig
Sadly, this must be addressed as a "problem," but the "problem" is that none of those tunes are suitable for a UIL-type competition. And they won't keep folks involved in band.
As far as keeping students... During concert season you have football tryouts, basketball etc. Every 5'6, 90 lb (wet) guy believes they'll be in the next NFL or NBA draft, and there's a crew of coaches who didn't make it, telling them how easy it is. So they'll workout and focus on sports until August-ish and they're now 5'6.0001" and didn't make the team. So they run to band at the last minute before school starts. They remain until spring, then the cycle begins again.
And of course district funding for fine-arts is being cut across the board in many districts. Unfortunately, fundraising attempts to make up the slack aren't as simple as they are in the burbz.
