ONE simple question ......i know t he more you learn the more your ears grows in music ...........

How do we get Junior high school back to sounding like high schools

How do we get high school back to sounding like college

and how do we get college band back to doing things we never heard

I am not saying we do not have good bands but ..we should have more than that... Not being able to play songs with sixteenth notes and whole note melodies is not what i want to hear .....we need SOME GOOD MUSIC NOT CROWD PLEASERS ..........

  • I would like to say thanks for you question... The answer is stop wondering and just do it! Im tired of everybody having average bands and yes there still a few good bands left... but for the most part in my opinion just stop with the how do get bands back ... just start all over and do it big. dont let NO body stop you from your dream of having a great band and just go  of it! Thats my plan ...

  • I would say get off the internet, and some folks might take it the wrong way.  But I am DEAD serious!  The internet takes the mystique out of everything...so by the time you see it live, it won't be anything you haven't seen or heard.

    Seriously, get off the net.

  • Band will never be like it used to be. Kids nowadays have lost their love for music and are focused on other things. Smh!!!!
  • Its too late for the internet thing. Once you hear a band thats loud and wrong on youtube, It turns into Loud and right for the new generation that thinks thats all that needs to be done in band now.

  • Ooops I mean JUST GO FOR IT! LOL...

  • Everything goes back to middle schools. Back in the day middle school directors taught, not saying some don't teach but most don't. They are worried about having their bands blow like colleges then that mess trickle downs to high school then college. One may not believe it but i knew all of my scales at the end of 8th grade, maybe not in octaves but i knew them at least one octave. Students are pushed and challenged anymore, doing just enough to get by is hurting bands. Once the middle school programs are strong and teaches the fundamentals needed to produce a mature sound, scales, technique, theory, musical knowledge in general etc. like many programs gave to their students then it will trickle down to high school then college. This why most bands were monsters band in the day. I also think the internet has killed the mystique of bands but the internet isn't responsible for teaching students the basics. The internet is here to stay. So we music focus on the main things that makes band great.

  • Stop giving mediocre Band Directors a job
  • I'm going to really tell you the problem. It's some stubborn band directors that are burnt out, have gotten lazy but don't want to retire to give someone that really wants the job a chance. It's happening everywhere. I know in the Caddo Parish they make sure the directors are teaching and if you don't attend concert and marching festivals you are looked down on so most attend them. Not saying everything in this parish is perfect. The major problem in the parish is the lack of directors so they had to close some music programs. The parish or country/music supervisor must set standards and expectations high. A band director can't be to mediocre if they past the praxis and the courses within the curriculum. It's the ones that been in the system forever, that are eligible for retirement that are just getting a paycheck and not teaching anymore that's the problem. Not saying everyone falls into that category but it's a big program: then another major problem is the lack of directors. They are closing programs because of that very problem. I think the parishes or counties should never close a music program if there is at least one director in that school district. Have that director cover the middle and high school. Actually he's feeding himself and has more time to develop the student musically. Now there are some directors that just think about marching band year around and focus on sounding like a college; those are the directors that need to be replaced.
