it took me quite a while, once Mr. D got there my 8th grade year, i really started learning how to read music and play with different tones for different styles of music. so im think lil more then 2 years. Still on the learning process of many things but I'm getting up there :)
Learning the system takes really a day, maybe a week. Treble clef, bass clef, C clefs, lines/spaces, note/rest values, time signature, key signature, scales, rudiments, bar lines, repeats, key vocabulary terms, and fingerings for your instrument if applicable.
It seems like a lot to process, but after a week, you should be able to identify what all those items are.
After that, it's a matter of practicing and making it part of your "cerebral" and "physical" memory.
beleive it or not it took me a week to learn how to read music. it was very easy to me. i very good in math so that has a lot to do with it. music and math kinda go together.

How long did it take you to learn to read music?
When you were in begining band how long did it take your instructor to teach yall music?
To just read music? Two days. Basic stuff like rythems and notes no the staff and the clef. It's not hard to learn. It's just a matter of applying the basics to everything.
