How to raise money for a band trip??

So the Stephenson High School band will be traveling to hawaii this november to do the National Bombing of Pear Harbor Parade in Waikiki, Hawaii. This will be the first band from georgia to go and the 9th band from "inland". So the senior class now wants to give back and want to help those attending so they can go. How would we begin to raise money (not a carwash or some crap like that). Or how would we get sponsered? Publix and Kroger is already sponsoring stephenson but how do we get more? What have you done to raise money?

When I was in school we raised enough money to travel to Greece by incorporating several revenue streams. I see you already have Publix - they also donated to us. I know you dont want to do it, but we did 1 car wash that was highly profitable because it was planned right. Lets say your band has 150 members - require each one of them to pre-sell 20 tickets at $3 dollars each and you would have raised $9,000 before you even have washed 1 car (most people just gave the 3 bucks and didnt even show up to get their car washed!). My band was bigger and we managed to raise a little over 10grand total off of that car wash. Also contact your local newpaper and let them know what you are doing. The media loves positive stories on kids - especially if it is an inner-city school and that would yield donations from the public. Lastly, Im not sure what the laws are n your town on panhandling, but our school was located near several busy intersections and we notified the police beforehand and were at each intersection accepting donations for the trip a few Saturday mornings from 10am to 2pm. We generally raised between $1,200 to $1,500 hundred at each intersection each time we did it.Bands are also full of talent - speak with your principal about having a talent show during school - lets say 6th period and charge each student $2 to attend. If you have a large gym or auditorium, you could easily raise a few more thousand there (students would definitely pay to get out of class for a period and have fun!). Also, during football season, after half-time have some of your band members go through the stands in their uniforms and use their hats as buckets to collect donations from the parents at the game (make sure the announcer says what they are collecting the money for and encourage them to give). I hope these ideas help and have fun on your trip!

  • Oh yeah, one thing we did a couple years ago that raised couple thousand. We went to a local mall (letting those who run it know and get permission and stuff) but they payed us to come play live music in the food count. Idk if that is something ya'll are looking for but its an idea.
  • sell some rocks n da corna lol jk sell candy o sumtin
  • Hey Congrats, Stephen F. Austin in Houston received that same invitation. This past fall we raised over $30K to go to California.  Here are a few ideas.

    1. Candy and Popcorn.  It sounds small but trust me, the $50 per person every 3 or 4 days adds up quickly.  Thing is EVERYBODY has to sell and not come back with bullshid excuses.

    2.  Small Battle of the Bands.  Have it right in your gym and invite another band or 3 if theres room. Let each band sell tickets and keep whatever they sell.  The home band sells concessions.  Since theres no outside food or drink, people WILL BUY FOOD.  Also for the food sales have each band member to bring food via a section chart.

Example:    Hot dog buns- trombones   Cheese-trumpets  chili-flutes  weiners-dancers

    ETC

    3. Stand on the side of the road and play on several corners while taking donations.  (we made $1200 in 4 hours)

    4. Patron Lists- the most effective.  We made about $5000 from patron lists.  Each band members takes a letter around and collects money and turns it in.

    5. Lunchtime food sales- If your school allows, have a lunchtime sale.  Once again use the band section chart to get the food.  Depending on your school body, you can sell either hot dogs (easy) fajitas, BBQ or fish dinners (friday) and make a lot.

  • sounds good Goldy....I like the idea of the BOTB, but all these seem like money makers...even colleges can learn a bit from that...

  • Was I the only person that missed the part about NO ONE wanting to actually get out and work to raise money?

"How would we begin to raise money (not a carwash or some crap like that)."

You can run around looking for sponsors (begging) all you want. If they dont see you doing any work why help?

At this rate theyll be lucky if 50 members are able to attend.

  • Now thats just too much work sir. The man wants sponsors!

  • ME and my band learned and realized that it takes hard work to make money. A month before our trip, Coach USA wanted a $15,000 down payment and we didnt have it.  OUR BUSES WERE CANCELLED.  When the band found out, they got on their hussle real quick.  Sometimes you need a wakeup call. After that, money started rolling in and our school board helped us out.  I was able to sweet talk the lady from Coach USA because she "Looks and sounds just like Beyonce"  (not) to hold on to our buses for an extra week til we got the down payment then the rest is GOD working a miracle.
