HS Drum Majors

Okay, as a bandsman and a band director, which would yo prefer: A drum major who is musically inclined, although they lack rhythm, or a drum major who can only really show out and dance?

I really would prefer a drum major who is more musical, as he's not only useful outside the bandroom. Also, you could learn a few moves and be half decent in a nice time period, but understand a lot of what it takes to conduct a band can be very time consuming. Also, you can even give your director a break by conducting the band and even arranging. What do you think?

  • Well I'm going to go with the "musically inclined" Drum Major. My decision is kind of bias considering I'm currently trying out for Drum-Major and I would fall into the musically inclined category. A Drum- Major who don't really know music wouldn't be able to help me out if I needed help with something (except with dancing lol). But of course there are some other factors in choosing a Drum-Major.
  • Musically inclined because its the drum major's job to lead the band..
  • this is a clear answer..
    Musical DM.
however now a days it's harder to get those along with still having a Section Leader who can do the same so I see more of "settling" than "Number 1" going on..

another thing: is it just me or are more DM's from Woodwinds..?
    [at least in HS]
  • I have also noticed that a lot of DMs come from woodwind when I learned about several bands.

  • musical drum major is better...because dm are like bd they should kno hw to control the band and even tranpose music 4 ppl tht need th special help..also have some moves bt more inportant fundamentals cz colleges don need drum majors tht shake there behind bt well trained and helpful...
  • is it possible to be musically inclined and not have rhythm? but we have a musically inclined DM and we've learned alot from him. but he cant dance to save his life
  • These type of threads are useless due to the fact that Everybody is going to try and be smart and Musically Inclined in some type of form or fashion and say " I rather a drum major with Musical Knowledge and ect" When I know for a straight fact that most schools base their stuff off of SHOWMANSHIP. Half these kats CANT MARCH, DOnt Know how to Hand Conduct Properly, nor Back up the BD and actually run Practices and Be a STUDENT DIRECTOR. Just because your a SHOWBAND doesnt mean u have to have a drum major. WORTHING for ex. has none and is doing fine. Most bands have Dmjors for SHOW and that is IT. Most schools I have seen would do better keeping their DMs on the horns, why have somebody infront of the band if they dont have an Impact on the Band and better yet the crowd. Im sick of Seeing DM/DM's just being out ther for no reason...
