I wanna know yalls opinion

..Do you think its right for a Band Director to get mad at you because you dont go to practice probably for 1 or 2 days of practice because you are trying to get ur academics/studies straight??...i.e. you had to skip practice or come late because you were at other extracurricular activities or in programs where they give u a scholarship but u have to do hours of tutoring every week or hours of working on getting ur classes and homework straight....to me academics have always been my number priority and then band ...but is it right for the BD to get mad because you had to do something else academically after school???? i wanna know wat yall think ...

  • academics are always first, but make time for band too.and if you know your director gone trip than why complain, just suck it up and ignore it.sounds like you need to manage your time and fix your agenda.
  • i mean im in band practice every day for about 4 hours after school or the days that i cant go i still sometimes try to make it ..sometimes,cuz i know he trips,i even skip other club meetings or tutoring just so he wont get mad..
  • remember, your not doing it for him,you tryna get your music scholarship for your good use.he's just there to help you along da way.

  • Prob not going to get much luv for this but here goes:

Not sure how your HS is run but when i was in HS the band as a whole had to built into band practice to study. Actually it was mandatory and set by the school that all student athletes had an hour or so of study time. Its the reason why 90% of the top honor students came from the band in the school.
Also you cant do everything you want to do, you just cant. In a well established band missing 1 or 2 days of practice will cause you not only to miss music but not to make rank for the show.
If anything, i'd open my mouth and would have and the discussion from the beginning of the season so everyone knew what the deal was and whats going on.
  • Do what matters most to you.
Thats the tough part of critical thinking and decision making.
Im quite sure your director isnt knocking your studies, maybe u going about telling him the wrong way. For example, not telling him in advance.

Sometimes if u cant any rational compromise, then u gotta cut ur losses. As a mature adult, Im sure ur Band Director will understand.
  • if ur gonna be in band its like a commitment. but academics should be always be ur 1st one. if u tryna do this that and this and that and u cant do it without keeping ur commitment to all of em...i think u got to much on ur plate
  • alright well thanks for yalls opinions..now i understand...
  • You have to look at it from both sides. Im sure your director is behind you in your academics and you doing better. Even if you have to miss a practice maybe once a week to get a scholarship. BUT you have to look at it like this. Are you in a leadership position? What happens to a football team if the quarterback has to miss two practices for academics during the week of the biggest game of the season. How is the team affected?

See too many people join organizations but give very little to each. If you are in Student Council, DECA, run track, play in the band and FBLA as well as Honor Society, you are doing way too much. Being a leader takes a lot of time and dedication. You have to learn TIME MANAGEMENT. Adequate time management will make you successful no matter how busy you are. And if you are still in high school having time issues, what are you going to do when you are in college? What about after college when you have a job, family and other things going on?

My suggestion is that you first sit down and map out your time each week, then discuss it with your band director. Ask him for a day you can do your studies and miss practice. Also ask him for ideas. Band Directors are masters at Time management.
