  • i don't know about other schools but when i was at SU most of the people in the concertband were not even in the marchingband and they were mostly music majors
  • Its required at some schools but not all. At my school we have to be in 3 major ensembles, marching band being one of them.
  • at JSU we have more music majors in our other ensembles than marching band. Its really all in wat u want to do
  • At Alabama State you have to have at least one semester of marching band one semester of concert band ( either wind ensemble or one of the symphonic bands) and one of the jazz bands. In edition you have to take at least one small ensemble and you have to be enrolled in a large ensemble every semester except the one that you student teach. As long as you meet that criteria you can come up with your own combination.
  • To answer your question showstyle lover, it varies at every school but i know at Grambling you don't have to be in the marching band to major in music, you can be in symphonic band or jazz band that are offered during both semesters.
  • When I finished at SU, music majors had to complete 2 sememsters of large enesembles (marching or concert band), small ensemble, and choir. In addition ,8 semesters of applied lessons and performance class. 4 Semesters of piano for non-piano majors (and a piano proficiency). The curriculum changes every so often so its best to check with the university you plan to attend.
  • You dont necessarily have to be in marching band BUT.... if you plan to direct a band, you will have to interview for that position. I know of very few schools who look for a director without marching experience. But if you decide to do Elementary Band/Music then its fine. Having marching band is just a big plus on the experience side
  • Agree 100%
