Im tired of people always tryin to get on B.R. bands...people think dat we dont have heart,passion,faith,or courage...I think dat we have all dat...just because we dont be "louder" than N.O. bands dat dont mean nothin...plus B.R. students not really into band like they use to...i myself love music and i plan to go to some type of hbcu and major in it...i attend scotlandville high i try(me as a student 16 years old) to get more students interested in music...but its hard when u havw all these wanna be gangsters in your city...when i go around the city(not just my school)and try to get more students in band...all dey do is ask can i get out of class,and the most popular question are yall going out of state...so stop always downing B.R. PERIOD...FROM THE DIRECTORS TO MOST OF THE CHILDREN ALL TRY TO GET MORE MUSIC IN YOUNG PEOPLE LIVES..!!

Truth is.being a good band has very little to do with how many events or battles you take part in. It's all about the music. and it doesn't matter where your band is from. If your band is the Best in your area, you should represent your band to the fullest.
when I was in HS we never thought about BR bands until we heard of the Baton Rouge All Star band (LLI) and honestly we felt that they put that together to compete with ours, but We never met face to face. but LLI did make an Impact in N.O in 2003. that was a something I'll never forget.
Ya'll felt that for no reason, it was created just so the BR kids could have the experience of marching in a large band and getting to travel to places they would never get to go with their own band. BR bands at that time were rock solid because Baker, Clinton, Glen Oaks, Mckinley, and Jackson were some top notch bands.
You are one of the few N.O. people to actually admit that LLI put on a show.
you're right about that. I heard of Baker, Glenn Oaks, Clinton and McK because they've all marched here before,I was in high school but aside from seeing them in line up nobody here knew anything of BR bands, most of the "beef" came from random Internet postings some time around 2003-04 year after LLI became LLI
To me The BEST thing about that is LLI Accomplished all those things,you mentioned and then some .like i
Our all star band was really started to play at an All Star football game. . it its 5 year existence they only traveled to Houston for a Texas Southern game. they did a few Saints games and parades. nothing fancy but it was a Monstrous entity on our part. We didn't know BR had an All star band until 2001.. I graduated in 2002 and I was Happy to see LLI in 2003 .. just murdered a whole stadium of N.O bands all at once.
I think McDonogh 35 went at it with LLI for a minute but it was no match. 35 was trying to be bold.. lol
YES IM ATTENDING LLI NOW ON MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS 6:30 TO 8 WE STARTIN OFF SLOW BUT JUST REALLY NEED PEOPLE TO START SHOWING BACK UP..SPREAD DA WORD ALL B.R. AND SURROUNDING AREAS
You're wrong on the part about N.O. people admitting that LLI put on a show, probably more like them not giving props to an All Star band going against regular highschool bands. We all said that LLI was a beast and to be honest, it was better before Knighten or any member of SU staff had something to do with it!!

this it in a nutshell yall not taking these horns home and practicing.it pisses me off some of yall are even playing that carver/walker/NO arrangement of jumpstart.yall losing what makes a br band what it is. sorry no one is going to march 100 they way the BR school system is nowadays.so yall not goin sound like a 100 piece band stop trying.its all about balance,playing in tune and reading the music and playing the rhymths and notes CORRECTLY.
Here is the truth because I speak from both perspectives:
New Orleans will be a strong hold because of the strong musical tradition in the city. The culture breeds musicians. The problem is that New Orleans students have playing ability but they don't have the required musical foundation and theory to get pass a certain point. In the NO there are a couple of middle schools that really teach music to children. So the high schools suffer and at some point the college bands suffer. Also there are very few legends in the making as far as band directors in the city. Right now there is only Rawlins and Asia at Easton that can get to that point. Until we really get down to the basics and teach (suffer for a bit) then we will sound loud and nasty. That is consistent for every band in New Orleans.
Baton Rouge has the best sound musicians I have encountered in a moment but there are three things that hold you back. Mentality, SU mimicry, and Adults. To me, NO native, an L to a rival school or just an L period made me feel less than human. I took marching band serious. Didn't miss practice. Practiced at home. Respected the uniform when I put it on. I believe band is too fun in BR. There is no sense of urgency. It is like the students accept the fact they can only get to a certain and level and not be great. Man BR, if they get their minds right, could be a power house. I am saying that because I see it. 2. Point blank stop playing SU arrangements because its not going to sound like SU. End of comment. 3. The band directors in BR petty. They are like that in NO but damn these dudes take it to new heights. They lose focus on the task at hand. Teaching kids how to enjoy and play music. If you are not about the kids quit.
As far as LLI. We are coming along slowly but once we get that critical mass point it will be powerful. Powerful in the sense that we will make a statement. As far as the Fields thing goes I firmly believe and know that he is for the program. And if you dont believe that well here is another solution for you: God damnit I am the band director. I have this under control.
Just think about if these facilities were put in another region: What would think the outcome would be? Blessing are never received unless you accept them.
