Important Factors of Selecting a University

1. Does that University Have Your Major?

2. Is that Major Accredited?

3. Facilities such as housing etc, you will be there 4 or more years so i'm sure you would want to be in something nice, especially if you're coming out of pocket a little.

4. Cost of Tuition

5. Scholarship be it band, academic, essay etc. try to get as many scholarships as you can/ Out of State Fee Waiver: if you want to go out of state- some bands pay out of state fees and some don't, ask questions. Many don't know while in high school that Out of State Fee's are the brunt of your expenses and if the band can pay it then, that's a great thing, if they can't, more than likely you will have to get loans that will have to be paid back.

If you can meet all of these goals you should be straight.

BTW, I hope you have already took your ACT, made the score and filled out your FASFA. FASFA is a Pell Grant that doesn't have to be paid back, that's if you are approved. It would be wise to only put one parent on the FASFA and the parent that makes the least amount of money. More money for you. Also concerning the ACT, go to the universities website and check out the admissions standards. Most Universities have have various admission standards so pay close attention to the scores: be it ACT or SAT, the courses that are needed to be admitted into the university and also what gpa is need to be admitted into the University etc. All Universities are different. Some Universities are Open Admissions that are easy to get in and some are Selective who's standards are a little higher than open admissions universities so do your research.

Any others college students and college grads with some tips please post them.

Any high school senior and students in general, if you have a question, ask them. It's better to know than to be disappointed when you start college. Don't assume.

  • pay your housing fee now. Even if you don't plan to attend. Secure your financial aid now. It's febuary and if you haven't done these things your behind the curve. When I went to Bama State I always heard people complain about financial aid lines and not getting housing or being put on waiting lists. In the new millenium if you're experiencing that problem your lazy. It can all be done online in a matter of minutes. I never stood in a line for housing registration or aid except when I had to pay to drop a class. That's all. I personally believe it's a little late to not have most of these things in place. Ok back to topic.
  • The main people that have financial aid, housing or problems in general are the ones that handle their business at the last minute.

BTW, Also send in those Admissions Application if you have not done so, with the fee attached, preferably a money order so it can be tracked. Keep documentation/copies of everything you send to the college. That is to cover yourself and throw it in their face when they say that you didn't send it. lol

If you can, the best way to get your stuff to the university is to take everything all it once in person so nothing get's lost.

  • Yeah you don't want to have to duck for bullets daily lol.

Also pay attention to the social setting of the college as well. This is the place where you will spend the next 4 to 8 years of your life and come into adulthood so you want to make sure it is a place where you will be comfortable. A college's graduation rate is also very important. You don't want to go and waste thousands to fall in the same traps of failure that other students have fallen into. All of the bits of advice given above are completely on point. Follow these tips and you are sure to have a successful start to the next and quite possibly most important phase of your life!

  • Good tips. Do some research on the university as far as fights and violence on campus also. You don't want to go into a war zone unless you're military. A parent or siblings don't want their children and family members going to a place that you will get harmed.
  • I and other stated the important things, now i just allow people to make up their own minds. Many don't realize the importance of selecting your college, we get so many people calling from universities trying to transfer because it wasn't what they thought it would be, they aren't getting the money they thought they would be or they are getting beat senseless lol but it's up on them mane lol
  • Also, make sure you find out on here who the seciton leader is and let them know you're coming and that you're stoked about learning the way that University does things. Let them know who you are and show some enthusiasm. Be upfront and positive and be sure to let them know that you will be a dedicated bona fide member of the section.
  • also know the types of students at the university. You don't want to get caught up stealing from hotels or beating people in an organazation that's the face of the university.
  • VISIT THE SCHOOLS BEFORE YOU GO TO THEM!!!!!!

Don't EVER go off what the next man says about a school until you go and visit it for yourself...

  • Many don't do that, then when they get there they be all depressed because it wasn't what they expected. lmao.

  • Female to Male ratio.

I'm looking for something in the 10:1 range...maybe 9:1. Anything below 8 is ruled out.
