Interpretation

So, a few weeks ago, I was preparing for my All-State auditions and my band director told me I needed to work on my interpretation of the piece.  Now, he told me that, but never explained what interpretation was, I quote "It's something my band director told me when I was in high school."

Now, is interpretation adding or removing elements from the etude, like playin' the music with a rubato feel, or raising the tempo a little?  Or is it something deeper I haven't found yet?  With my 1st idea of interpretation, I would believe they would take points off for such things, but I hope it's not the latter.

If anyone wants to know, I made to the 2nd round of auditions, only 2 students from my county made it I think (and we both play sax and knew each other, lol).

How many other kids from Georgia made it to the 2nd audition for All-State?  My extra $17 for it hasn't gone to waste yet, lol.

  • To me, interpretation is playing the piece how you feel it should be played. Play it according to your mood and feelings. Have your own style.
