Don't select your collegiate band just for the band. Grambling is looking for bright musicians that aren't scared of hard work. Don't knock the program if you haven't tried it and because some of your buddies hate it. The University has so much to offer and the band pays nice to help you with your education costs. In these days and times money is very essential for college education. The goal for GSU Band ultimately is to build the numbers to 400 members as stated by Dr. Edwin Thomas, Assistant Director of Bands at an interview at Bayou Classic. There is more than band info on the video, the video gives you links concerning academics, housing etc.BTW, Ask yourself, Am i'm good enough to make a big difference in someone's program or do I just do the typical thing, follow the crowd and just be a small fish in a big pond? That's how i always thought when i approach things.

  • Honestly, there is a major upside to going to Grambling. Unlike other HBCU bands, GSU travels the most. You'll fly 1st class everywhere you go, and sleep in the best hotels. When I was there in 98 my boys at SU were jealous of how much we traveled. Being that I am from New Orleans, I'll admit that I am a big SU fan. However, back in the day SU didn't give away a lot of scholarship money, and they didn't travel much unless it was by bus. Now if you just want to be in a great band, go to SU, JSU, PV, NSU, BCC, FAMU, etc. Nobody will hate you for your choice. However, as RJ1919 stated, "The University has so much to offer and the band pays nice to help you with your education costs. In these days and times money is very essential for college education." Although I didn't stay at GSU, I wish I would have. After graduating I was faced with a harsh reality, paying off my student loans. But you can cut out a lot of that unnecessary stress by attending the school that is going to give you the most money, rather than going to the school you think has the best band. Think of it as a business decision. You wouldn't sell something of value to the lowest bidder, right? How much are you worth?
  • Most folks with high student loan debts simply took out too big of loans. If your "refund" is enough to buy cars, accessories, go on trips etc... Do anything and everything besides school, then you're taking out too many loans.

  • Chris, while I agree with you, I guess the operative word here is "MOST". Not everybody can survive away from home without taking out a large student loan. Maybe some people have obligations (i.e. children, car notes, bills, etc.). The truth of the matter is college is an expensive expense that MOST graduates and dropouts will have to pay back. You can opt to pay it back yourself, or have the college or university payback most of it for you. It's your choice. After dealing with the former, I would definitely choose the latter if I could do it all over again.

  • I never had to take out any loans. My pell grant, band scholarship, academic scholarship and having a family member that attended Grambling, i think it's called a Heritage Scholarship or something, (that is a scholarship in itself through the university: took care of everything i needed and i always got nice refunds back). Many people choose college for the wrong reasons and particularly people marching for bands, they go to college first for the band then that band doesn't care of them financially.  They also didn't take their education serious in high school to get an academic scholly, which isn't very hard to get. One thing i can honestly say about Grambling is if you receive a band scholarship/out of fee waiver you will get what you were awarded. The only way you can lose your waiver and/or scholarship is falling under 12 hours, under a 2.0 and the amount of classed passed must equal to 12 hours or more. Most black people don't take the time and research for free money: it's so many people that i helped that attend Grambling now and didn't have to get one loan, i referred them to this site and they found a scholarship that they could get and they also found other websites. Check out this particular link:

BTW, I was referred to this site by my Financial Aid Counselor at Grambling, most financial aid counselors don't do that they just tell peeps to get loans. True some have to get loans some i'm not knocking anyone but everyone's situation is different. That's their business on what they get and they are the one's that are going to pay it back. The new President of GSU is on his job and he is making sure the Financial Aid Counselors are helping GSU students.

  • Thats a nice video. I hope FAMU has all those things when i get there.

  • I like this man, you're not just giving the kids info on band but academics and housing along with other things. Nicely done man and very well put together. Can't beat out of state fee paid plus scholarship. The way college tuition is going up, only a fool will pass this up.
