Is Band Relevant Without Having Footage?

I know a whole bunch of people who are in band, perform and the first thing that come out of their mouths are.."where the clips at?....this is including myself because I love watching clips. But what if an event wasnt really"recorded" or band media wasnt present. I wonder if some or if not the majority of the people would still be interested in band.

  • ill say one thing. those events would make so much more money because people would actually have to go see them instead of waiting for the clips to pop up on youtube.

  • I still havent seen footage from my last year in high school. to me The NEW footage of new events loses its purpose after a month ...

  • thats the point of having a site for it. and alot of people scattered around and cant go see everything so clips put everybody in the conversation

  • It was relevant for a MULTITUDE of years before footage... there was the infamous Word of Mouf that spread the legends that are our HBCU marching bands today

  • we had audio in 2000 LOL and 3 clips ftom 1 event did alot of justice for bands back then

  • GOOD POINT!

  • Im not gonna lie if their wasn't any footage many band s would have a greater wow factor than now but clips make people lazy why go to a event and pay when you could watch it free online

  • This.  I was going to make a topic on this, but this thread just lets me speak on it.  Clips being so available is starting to make HBCU bands, stale.  I guess that's the word for it.

When I first saw clips of different HBCU bands, I was like "Wow, yo, that's amazing!"  Those bands, were fucking excellent, much better than the college in my area.  I didn't watch a whole bunch of clips my freshman and sophomore years, so when I had finally saw the 100 in Atl my junior year, I still had that "wow" factor.  After that, I started watching way more clips.  Everytime I discovered a new band, I listen to that band A LOT, but then I get bored with them after a while.  By the time, I saw the 100 my senior year, that "wow" feeling was gone.  I was still impressed, just not wowed.  Same goes for when I first saw SU in Atl, or SCSU in Orangeburg or BCU in Orlando my freshman year in college with the 100.  I'd already seen those bands so much on YT and bandhead, that when I got to seeing them live, it just wasn't the same.

A BIG reason band clips are THEORETICALLY good is for people who can't go the BR to see SU or go to Atl for Jamboree.  But making them available to those people requires making them available to everyone.

Also, band clip also opens up bands to WAY more criticism.  And it's made us (as bandsmen) soft, atleast to me.  I see very few people who can't take criticism without rebuttalling something ignorant.  At the same time, it's opened up for people to be dickheads and say whatever to get under people skin. "Oh, I seen the Trombone player mess up that dance routine, SORRY ASS BAND DX TROLOLOLOL."

I have way more opinions on this, but I have to get back to something else I was doing.  Either way, clips are a double edged sword, but the one side is starting to get sharper than the other.
