Is there a way to keep these section names without having to Fraternize them? (the obvious answer is yes/ but i want your opinions)

I ask this because it seems "Taboo" in todays band world to talk openly about experiances in band / your section/ as a crab (or Underclassman) due to the fact that Somebody iis out there ready to Kill off a band program.

  • And what's crazy is probably everyone that is (apart) of a section has feedback to give. I think about this everyday because hazing had a major impact on my life. Good and Bad. some habits i still hadn't shook. But this is the only thing we as bandheads are going to have to address.. Soon. One day.

The fact that people don't think its legit to become apart of something without getting their ass beat is obsurd!! I most certainly believe that it should be more community service oriented, more muscianship required. I know there were plenty morning performances as a freshman i struggled to make. some i didn't even make. But i know demereting students for things like that could take the place of a paddle when it comes to getting letter for a designated section. Its not that it couldn't be incorporated, students just don't realize the potential it has to grow if this hazing thing is abolished. There isn't any reason anyone should take paddles for any reason. be hit physically for any reason. None at all. this is a different day and time.

You should still be considered "real" or the "realest line" to come through without taking a brutal beating or losing your life.

Now I look foreward to summers so that i can participate with the all star bands. Its fun, totally safe, and always a fun not to mention cranking good time..

If this can go on in the summer and have just as much good success as an allstar band.. Why are students brainwashed to get their ass beat to come to a college band and be apart of an organization that NEEDS them to survive.

Sad to say but some of our smartest and brightest college students believe in this very method of "beating ass"

  • RIGHT!...

  • True. Other mentalities think otherwise, which is the sad part. But great points though!

  • I look at the facts that Sections and their names mean alot to bands, you take the hazing away and do your part and you should be able to claim hold to that sections name.

  • Depends on the bands. Just look at how many.bands are still hazing since the FAMU stuff it keeps happening. hazing will still be around but needs to stop
  • NO!!! *Get in the cut*

Lol jk jk yes it is. Just base it off of learning the history and performing to build off tradition.

  • to keep the section names and keep what they're about, the best thing to do is for these kids to learn all their scales, like your dorian, locrian, mixolydian(sp*), so on and so forth. when these kids are crabs, have them start learning jazz scales, all their arpedgios(my spelling is horrible), and other things. so at the end of the day, it's just not the title they have, they have the musicianship behind the "letters"

  • I WISH I could like this. Im going to try to incorporate that...'"""""MUSICIANSHIP BEHIND LETTERS"""""' theme. Not just the fact you got yo ass beat. When someone sees your letters they IMMEDIATELY KNOW your level of musicianship. And hanging in the balance of that is pride. and Payoff for your hard work and dedication.
