  • well, thats a question u can pretty much think about urself,as much as ppl disect stuff on this site,i dnt really think u can do too much disecting on this subject.dis topic is not gonna go very far.
  • I think that depends on how successful you've been with your tradition. Some bands don't need to change as much as others.
  • Yes, some bands use tradition as a scapegoat all the time.

Some people are too lazy to realize you can be innovative and still maintain your tradition. Its not about doing new things, but moreso about how you execute those new ideads and incorporate them into your own style.

I agree, some bands have been successful, at doing what they do, but TRADITION should not hold you back from evolving into something even better.

I think there are good traditions (such as what that band is built on.....-what makes that band, THAT BAND.) and there are bad traditions, that are holding that band back from evolving into something totally unstoppable.

Tradition is what holds a band together, without the tradition, your identity, is long lost in the wind.

Thats why i can really respect The Human Jukebox and The Marching 100 (there are more bands that i could name, but i just wanted to name these two right now) Because they really hold on to those traditions that make them THE HUMAN JUKEBOX AND THE MARCHING 100. They didnt change just because thats what "everyone else was doing", or whatever the case may be. For example, how SU continues to roll with the fiberglass sousas...I agree with almost ANYONE here that fiberglass sucks and we would rather have the power of BRASS lol, but for SU, Fiberglass sousas helps to give them that 'sound' that makes them SU. I mean if you check out some clips of Alcorn, they sound so much different with brass tubas..(which happened to be a good change for them haha)

AS FAR AS HALFTIME SHOWS, i think alot of these bands could be more creative and innovative. Like many of you, Im tired of seeing the SAMMMME drill each saturuday lol....(lmao i wont name any bands here) .But ALOT of bands need to get away from that...what happened to Halftime is showtime?! I thought that was the time you really show out and showed what you were really made of?!...Most people now-days dont care about nothing but the '5th quarter' tho...which i agree is very exciting, but im just saying some people's priorities are set up incorrectly..
Is Traditon Sometimes Used An Excuse For Increativity
It seems that if a band claims something to be tradition, they can keep doing over and over. And not even change. So do bands use tradition as a scap…
  • This is is not always true of tradition being an excuse for not being creative. If used correctly, tradition can be used for new ideas. For example: looking at footage from the past to get ideas that are similar but modern.
  • What bands actually do that? And on a regular basis?

  • To get ideas for certain aspects of our field shows, particularly the bottom half, we did it a lot at Grambling and looking at old footage is used often when developing the routines and breakdowns.
