I realized that the average high school or young “band head” looks at youtube all day. The question that I have is this, are the students are “so call musicians” are being corrupted by youtube. They look at “sorry” bands all day, is it the band director’s fault?
You need to be a member of bandhead.org to add comments!
it's not the directors fault. it's the industry's fault. bands play music that artists come out with, and with all this bubble gum rap and lazy attempts at a good arrangement just to sell a track, there's really no help at all here. lucky we have good bands with great arrangers that make tha best at what these new artists come out with
it's also the dedication of the band members to put on a good performance. if i was a band director, i'd use the horrible bands as a learning tool and compare them to the greats like a university of ohio, southern, famu, fsu, usc, and other top college bands. that's what you're suppose to do anyways
I appreciate your comment. To rebutt your question tho, but isn't still the band directors opition to play those tunes are not. I agree with 95% of everything you said, I am a music major at PVAMU so I am going through that problem right now when I arrange music for High schools now, but thank you again for your comment.

Is youtube corrupting our younger generation in band students, or is it the band director’s fault?

Youtube is more of a problem because High schoolers get to see any performance be it good or bad...... I kno I saw a practice clip of us and it wasnt good cause we had just learned the songs and my fear is high schooler imitates that. The other problem is High schoolers are not exposed to good music by their parents. This makes it very hard for directors to teach students that dont have open spectrums about music, along with the community that wont support the band if they play things that out of the norm. Best way to give the students strong backgrounds is lettin them listen to different music in class (I know it helped me) and showinthem how or craft have progressed and takin them to HBCU wind ensemble performances because its so much more than jus marching band..... My 2 cents
i remember when i was in high school, i had arranged ignition by r kelly and only the students who took our bd's music theory class could write for the band. when he asked us what we wanted to write, we were going thru tracks and when we got to ignition, he immediately said no. his band wasn't gonna play anything by r kelly. my band director had full control over the band but he placed his rules in play and put the students he knew who would apply his philosophy the best way in charge. a band director in a sense, is suppose to an unofficial parent to anyone that comes in their class. music is the biggest influence in this world. tunes are easy to remember and hard to forget. musicians tend to be the best at what they do if they decide to better their life after high school. the band director, in a way, extends the motor skills of their students. how else would they be able to drill and play 5-7 pieces of music at a time. musicians are blessed with a gift. and it's the band directors job to not only play parent, but also play counsler. band directors have a major influence on their students. that's a lot of hard work lol
See, this is part of the reason I'm glad we didn't have Youtube during our day, because although the Influence can be Great. kids get the wrong Idea because they look for the wrong things. We weren't exposed to college bands other than SU and Grambling during my day. it wasn't something we saw everyday so we enjoyed it.
I think its great to know that these kids see that there's a wide variety of bands aside from those in their own city or state. This site is in the business of promoting Bands and The Bandhead lifestyle (whatever that may be ... to each its own) .. providing the content for everyone to vew REAL it gets when you're out on the Field.
At the same time we want to promote other forms of band so that people can see that there's more to band than a Fanfares and Rap songs. It only depends on Who is Influenced by What .. because I can take many Youtube band videos for educational reasons.

Thats the same point I wanted to emphasize on.
You cant control the way a person perceives something.
It it the very reason why we all argue and talk smack on this website.
People always want others to "see it their way."and every1 at some point feels that others should like what they like.
This is a good discussion. Yet, I feel that any vessel of media can be used as an aid or a hindrance.
It is a varying combination of parents. peers, and/or directors that dont filter out dumba.s.sness 4rm the educational setting.

I think it goes both ways. Youtube and band videos can be a great resource and study guide of what to do and what not to do. I often watch videos and decide what not to do after watching videos of the colleges. Some directors spend their time copying drills and arrangements, sorry but thats lazy.
It all depends on how the director presents the videos to their students. This hip hop movement has hurt our programs but then again, it goes back to the arranger. If a rap song is too empty, I dont even waste my time with it, but if it has something I can work with or embellish, then I go for it. THere are a few very musical hip hop songs and if the right person is arranging, it can have some fire to it.
The only problem I have with Youtube is that it makes my kids want to duplicate instead of being original. When I started my band from scratch 5 years ago, my goal was to be the most unique program in America: from the attention, horn carriage, uniform, arrangements, drilling, percussion setup, marching style etc. I often get flack from kids saying "All Star Band played this, can we play it? or Southern did this in their show, can we do it? " Ive even had kids to break our plumes then ask can we get hats like everybody else.
LOL @ Blazing20s for creating a new word which I will be stealing. DUMBNESS !!!!

Good point! Im part of this Hip Hop generation, and I find NO OFFENSE!
What some directors dont understand is that Hip Hop is more political/social than musical/social.
So thats what creates the empty arrangements. And when you build ur song repetoire off majority Hip hop, ur foundation for music will be weak.
Parents, students, and/or directors go wrong when they use YouTube as the answer instead of a tool to get the answer!

really can't blame the directors for playing hip-hop when that's what the crowd wants to hear.
the main objective of a marching band is to entertain and when you have a high-school pep rally and football game full of kids 14-18 in age, they don't want to hear oldies. they want to hear soulja boy and "jerk" rap (ugh).
show style marching band is reflective of whats coming out of the radio and sadly it's nothing but crap coming out of the radio.
but youtube has killed marching band.
as i said in a previous thread awhile back, i kinda miss the old days before youtube and marching network where you would see no clips of a band on the field from the season until you see them LIVE and the excitement of seeing those bands LIVE and seeing a show you haven't seen before.
