About 27 Jackson State University marching band members could be suspended from school for two years, pending an appeals process this week.
JSU Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Life Marcus Chanay said judiciary hearings this week determined that the students — mostly members of the Sonic Boom of the South’s percussion section — had hazed freshman band members at an off-campus event Sept. 18.
The suspended students, including two former band members who are enrolled at JSU, have 24 hours to appeal the decision to Chanay’s office. The appeals process can take two days after that, he said.
During the two year suspension, students likely will not be able to enroll elsewhere because a hold will be put on their records. In fall 2011, they can ask to be reinstated at JSU.
“Typically, we approve those requests,” Chanay said.
Last week, the university announced that it was investigating about 45 band members following allegations of hazing that included the paddling and beating of freshmen percussion members.
A student who suffered a fractured shoulder has told Jackson police that he does not want to press charges. The alleged victim has a year to change his mind, authorities said.
Despite the 280-member Sonic Boom losing many of its upperclass percussion players, the band will perform at this weekend’s football game, JSU spokesman Anthony Dean said.
No... hazing is BS... They didnt have to do that ish... but Im happy the boom will be there sat... Freshman better hold it down!! it happen to the boom when I marched... freshman did what they had to do!

idk pat sounds like a good excuse comin from the boom.o well i know the grounds crew is happy at memorial.they won't need to replant more grass on the sideline after this game.1 question does the percussion still have to march 10 to 5 even though they r on the sideline lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So basically, the university let the consenting freshmen off the hook, and only punished the oldheads?
While I feel NO sympathy for the suspended oldheads (they better be glad they not in jail over this), I feel the the freshemen should be held somewhat accountable for their actions as well. Like it's been argued before, NOBODY forced them to be hazed.
So why are they getting a free pass (assuming that they are getting a free pass)?
Anyway, now most of those oldheaads probably had planned on graduating within a year or two. Now, because of their "dumbarsed-ness", they gotta wait TWO years before they can even return to school, not to mention graduate. Serves them right.
You gotta think bout it though, how mature are most freshman. They jus doin wat they thought was the right thing to do which is cross the section. It's easy to brainwash young ni99as in a negative way. I made plenty stupid mistakes when I was a freshman but they don't need to be jus thrown to the side witout even havin a chane to grow and mature. They only been here 2 months lol.

hey pat it is 8 to 5 if u actually march but since jsu have went away from this great tradition and they have decided to walk its now 10 to 5 on a good day ive actually even seen them on a 12 to 5 and i mean they r really on it then

No matter what happened, the college has no right to put a hold on their account. If they don't owe the college money, how can they hold their transcripts? They could go home and enroll at the local junior college and take classes. If that's the case, kick them out of school permantly and let them go on about their business.
