JSU vs. SU: Arrangements

I've been wondering...I don't care if this post starts some $h!t, which it will...but I've noticed the new argument jukes bring up against the Boom are arrangements. They argue that The Boom's arrangements are elementary..LMAO. I bring up the fact that this comes from a band with recent hits such as "Hay", "Just A Dog", "Adios', etc. Can a NON-IGNORANT, SU ALUMNI drop some knowledge on this hot issue.

  • Oh yeah, this topic was posted by me JGrows....Walt, LOG OUT next time u use my computer n1gg@!!!! LMAO
  • I would honestly say that SU only cares about power. They have the elementary arrangements. They don't care about balance or anything. Let me remind you that I don't go to either college. I would say that JSU has the better arrangements because other than power, JSU's arrangement exhibit balance. At JSU there aren't 50 trumpets playing the same note. Trombones don't just play whole notes. Mellos don't get as high as they can get. They play where the melodic sounds of a MELLOphone should be played. To top it off, JSU has a funky drum section that DOESN'T play the same thing to every song. The only thing that SU has is baritones and trumpets. SU has to crank on EVERY song, even when they play marches, lol! MUSICIANSHIP is shown as JSU.

  • But look at the music that is played on the radio today. Ain't nothing difficult about it AT ALL!

Arrange a tune with the slightest hint of a counter melody and folks will complain about how they try to be like FAMU and play the song as if it were arranged for a symphony orchestra.

Arrange a tune that sounds exactly like the original and folks will complain that it's too simple and lacks creativity.

    It's a lose/lose situation. Folks are gonna hate...regardless...

  • It's funny how you naming nothing but rap songs, but what about the songs that put SU on the map like Getaway, Black and Blues, Get it On..........And don't make me mentions them Knighten ballads cuz everbody knows that Knighten runs the SWAC when it comes to arranging ballads!
  • But honestly, JSU is the illegitimate-father of the "play-8measures-softly-long-tuba-break-then-play-louder-to-simulate-cranking" pop tune. JSU will play ANY and EVERYTHING that comes on the radio. Like SERIOUSLY. The tunes that you named for SU, and similar tunes USUALLY start as dance-break tunes for halftime. (Once Mr. J or Knighten sees that the crowd enjoys the tune, it gets tweaked for the stands.) As far as who's arrangements are actually better..... It's apples and oranges. And, to be ABSOLUTELY honest with myself...... Neither schools arrangements are what they used to be in the 80's. But, I do feel that JSU has a few elementary tunes, because of the student arrangers. Everyone on the team at SU knows 'the secret recipe' and every song has that SU feeling to it. Also, to claim non-balance on the S's behalf, is crazy. Is it balanced the way FAMU balances THEIR band? NO, but is it balanced the way a HUGE-BRASS-MONSTER should be? YES. Every section has their place and role, and they are all well rehearsed.

But, lets do a song-for-song comparison:

    Swoop vs Swoop = JSU
Black and Blues vs Black and Blues = SU
Before I let Go vs Before I let Go = (Not so clean cut to me, but I prefer SU's)

**Also, take into consideration, any song that SU plays that is BARELY 1min long is a Dancin' Dolls tune....... They dont get the love and tender care that the songs for the band get (Cuz frankly, we would love to drop them and do a 3rd drill, or maybe even a ballad, but Alumni would DIE *And Doc* if it ever happened).
  • Now I'm all up for honest criticism, but I take that last comment as an insult. we do NOT crank ever song. on the contrary, trombones don't always play whole notes, most of the songs they played rhythms and they have the melodies in a few songs, and the mellos just get ignorant on five songs at the most, it just that the section was made up of two crabs and 16 upperclassmen so the power is guaranteed to come fro the section. So before you judge SU ON ARRANGEMENTS, listen to any song written by CARNELL KNIGHTEN
