LOSING MUSIC IN THE HBCU WORLD

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WE ARE LOSING MUSIC IN THE HBCU WORLD. IN THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY WORLD, MUSIC IS THE FIRST THING TO GET PULLED AND IN HIGH SCHOOL IT IS STARTING TO BE LIKE THAT AS WELL. HIGH SCHOOLS DON'T PLAY MUSIC AS WELL AS THEY SHOULD AND USED TO, AND A LOT OF TIMES TRY TO BE SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT, AND THEN THEY GROW UP TO BE COLLEGE PEOPLE LIKE THAT, SHAPING THE BANDS TODAY. DON'T GET ME WRONG, A LOT OF COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY BANDS ARE OUTSTANDING, BUT THEY ARE LOSING THE MUSIC. MY BAND DIRECTOR ALWAYS SAY, MOST ANYONE CAN PLAY MARCHING BAND MUSIC, BUT WHO CAN REALLY "PLAY" MUSIC, AND MAKE MUSIC, LIKE IN SYMPHONIC BAND OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WE ARE LOSING MUSIC, AND WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN GET IT BACK AND KEEP IT. THIS IS A FORUM, SO LETS HAVE A REAL DISCUSSION, WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

  • get music back deep into the communities....start music back in elementary schools...give these kids some artistic craft to express themselves instead of sitting in front of a tv or video game all day
  • Starts in elementary then middle school, then the musical culture/variety should increase in High School. Parental support should be encourage heavily. Once the students jump on board then the parents are supportive and see their kids are learning about culture and enjoy it, then everything will level out like it once was. That will then flow throughout the community because the parents and students are apart of the community. Elementary and Middle School programs are really the key. I remember in elementary listening to Mozart tunes, Bach etc.: you could catch those tunes on cartoons such as: Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny etc. Directors need to make sure the students are introduced to a variety styles/types of music at any expense.
  • MOST PEOPLE TODAY LIKE RAP, R&B, AND THAT SORT OF MUSIC, AND ARE QUICK TO ARRANGE IT, BUT YOU RARELY EVER SEE PEOPLE ARRANGING SYMPHONIC TUNES, OR COMPOSING THEM, AND PUBLISHING THEM. IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE IF YOU ASK ME

  • People can like rap, r&b etc but we must make sure the kids in elementary, middle and high school are exposed to other types of music. If they aren't accustomed to it they will not be interested in it. My band director always played classic music, marches, symphonic pieces in the room as we came in, especially during concert season, took us to festivals to just listen also. It's up to the directors, it's to many that are so focused on marching year around, focusing on botb's year around, not even exposing their students to concert band or the literature, that's the problem.

  • This is a true statement. I think it started around 08
  • Some folks are just out of touch with music, I  personally always did listen to every genre of music. now days folks listen to what is main stream.

when it came to band, it was a time of the season for most tunes. You can get away with playing pop tunes  in concert band. it's not a bad thing at all. especially if the arrangement was bought from a music publishing company.

For Concert season, we went over common published tunes such as marches, & Screamers. otherwise we played known Theatrical Music like Star Trek, The Next Generation, Colors of the Wind and Can You Feel the Love tonight.  for practiice purposes we even a concert series that we HATED called Kaleidescope because it was like 30 pages long and very repetitive ..LOL

oddly enough the only Marches we normally played were National Emblem and Barnum & Bailey's Favorite anything else was passed out at concert season.

  • i dont completely blame the schools even though that is a major part of why the bands are going down hill, but the radio does come into effect. Everyone wants to play whats hot and new on the radio, which isnt bad, but the stuff on the radio has no substinance. Our culture has moved from using live bands in recording to synthetics which is nothing when compared to the real thing. If you look in the past few years you can clearly point out the songs with a great instrumentation. Its not as many as it use to be. Songs arent that difficult, and for some strange reason people gravitate towards the easy instead of challenging themselves which always leads to mediocre bands.
  • MY BAND DIRECTOR MAKES SURE WE ARE EXPOSED TO ALL GENRES OF MUSIC, HE MAKES SURE WE KNOW WHAT TO LISTEN FOR, HE MAKES SURES WE KNOW HOW TO MAKE MUSIC, BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT, YOU CAN JUST SIT AND READ THE NOTES ON THE PAPER, BUT CAN YOU MAKE MUSIC OUT OF IT? THATS THE IMPORTANT STUFF, THATS WHY I LOVE MY DIRECTOR, AND ME BEING A MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR I CAN APPRECIATE THAT, AND WILL PASS IT ON, I CONSIDER MYSELF AN ACTIVIST FOR MUSIC, AND KEEPING IT ALIVE, BECAUSE THATS REALLY ALL I HAVE, AND THATS ALREADY SO MUCH, IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN, BUT WE NEED MORE CLINICS, MORE FESTIVALS, MORE WORKSHOPS, MORE COMPOSITIONS, MORE MUSIC TO CHALLENGE THE MIND, DON'T SETTLE FOR THE MUSIC YOU KNOW YOU CAN READ, GO FOR THE HARD STUFF, CHALLENGE YOURSELF, AND THEN DON'T JUST GET IT TO WHERE YOU'RE OK WITH IT, PERFECT IT, AND PERFORM IT....THERE'S SO MUCH TO MUSIC, AND A TURN AROUND IS  GREATLY NEEDED.....
  • THAT IS TRUE
  • well with programs like fruity loops and cubase... all producers do is sample 1 chords and repeat it 1,000,000,00 time...
