NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana State University Tiger Band is set to be inducted this weekend into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame — the only college marching band to receive such an honor. The band, known as the "Golden Band from Tigerland," had a fight song written by Louisiana Gov. Huey Long and had internationally known jazz orchestra leader Castro Carazo as its band director in the 1930s."This band's history in Louisiana is deep," said Mike Shepherd, executive director of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame organization. "Huey Long saw that band as a form of entertainment, a way to bring joy and good during a tough time like the Depression."Castro and Long collaborated on a number of compositions famous at LSU, including "Touchdown for LSU," ''Darling of LSU" and "LSU Cadets March."Castro and Long will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony at LSU on Friday. The Tiger band will be inducted during halftime of Saturday's football game between LSU and Vanderbilt, Shepherd said."I can't think of a better way to induct that band than during a halftime show," he said. The halftime show will include the Tiger band performing Al Johnson's "Carnival Time," Robert Parker's "Barefootin'" and Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff." A video screen will show pictures of Johnson, Parker and Knight — all past inductees of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame — and images from the Tiger band's history.Though Louisiana has many great college band programs — including those at Southern University and Grambling State University — Shepherd said no other band program has the kind of history as that of the Tiger band at LSU.Shepherd said few other college bands have been as integral to the identity and lore of their school, culture and athletic program as the Tiger band. And, he said, few others have produced as many professional musicians and music educators, among them Academy Award-winning composer Bill Conti and Emmy Award-winning TV and movie composer Julie Giroux.Shepherd said the Tiger band will be the 45th inductee into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. The band will join the likes of Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Gov. Jimmie Davis. The Hall of Fame has seen a rise in inductions in recent years — an attempt to make up for lost time, says Shepherd."We are so behind," he said. "We were so underfunded for so long. The opportunities for these inductions are finally happening, and we are grabbing them when we can."The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame was founded in 1980 but went without any inductions from 1986-2005 due largely to lack of funding and resources, Shepherd said."We've lost a lot of musicians who should have been inducted while they were still alive," he said. "As money are resources are available, musicians will be inducted."This year, the Hall of Fame has inducted signer-pianist Little Richard, pianist and hit songwriter Allen Toussaint, the late rhythm and blues singer Ernie K-Doe, Elvis Presley guitarist James Burton, music businessman Stan Lewis and the late country singer Johnny Horton.Next month, the Hall of Fame will induct Cajun singer and songwriter D.L. Menard and three other Cajun musicianshttp://www.2theadvocate.com/news/58089597.html?showAll=y&c=y

The statement about Southern and Grambling not being able to match LSU's band history is interesting. If that statement is true, ole Jim Crow and Plessy v. Ferguson might have had a lot to do with that.

A shameless plot to try and keep the two HBCU bands out of the HOF. That comment was completely uncalled for IMO

See I don't even think its fair to go there cause Southern and GSU get a lot of credit that LSU doesn't, so does it matter that LSU's band gets one thing that SU's and GSU's dont? Don't get me wrong, when it comes to history, LSU's band probably does have a more stout history cause the university was open decades before either GSU or SU was thought of and as a military school, band was an essential, but don't act like they've never done anything either. They did win a Sudler trophy, which is not prejudice and a nationally prestigious award as FAMU was one of the first to win it back in the 80's, but neither SU or GSU have done that. So its a lot more to the story than old fashion racism and how many people know your band, damn people really don't realize how much respect people in the band at LSU have for people at SU for an example, I see it everyday, cause I go to LSU but I grew up around that Southern style marching so I still love my HBCU's but I show my roommate (who is in LSU's band) some of the vids and he's amazed himself at some of the things they do. I actually thought he had a good idea tho, he said what if LSU and SU were to play a football game and the bands reversed roles.SU march and play how LSU does and LSU like SU. Just for an interesting experiment, but he and I both think that would bring a major since of respect to each side and respect for what each other does.
How can you respect someone that doesn't respect you? It's so easy to say what you just said but in reality i say Fock LSU!

But that's what you don't see...they do respect them, because a lot the things SU band does, LSU's can't do. A lot of people like you who doesn't know LSU's band history hops up and calls em out as if they don't when you don't kno. Honestly, have you spoken to one of em, because I know a classmate of mine who is in the band at SU was over on our campus last year and I introduced him to many of my friends here that were in the band and they traded stories and songs and got a long because no matter what style you play there's a commonality.
