With everything going wrong with the U.S. Economy, do you find that a major and education in music hold its value? Do you consider music to be a neccessity to wholistic education and life in general? What do you plan to major in to ride out our crumbling economy and status as the world's reining reserve? All opinions are welcomed and encouraged.

Music is a major necessity in this world today. It's one of the greatest thing that God ever created. Music has enough power, truthfully, to turn this whole economy around and make it better. Some may believe that I'm just saying this because I love music or it's my major, but if you research properly, you'd see that music it everywhere. It's a part of of. Our brain is divided into 2 hemispheres: right brain & left brain. Music is in our right brain. Even people that hate music have lied to themselves. Music is indeed a NECESSITY.
music has been proven to make a person more efficient in life...musicians have to use both sides of our brains, read and respond almost instantaneously, be precise, and the amount of practice a good musician puts in will make him more detailed and particular about not only his music, but also the things in life.
so...as a music major, I believe that music is just as necessary as any other subject.
Your response and enthusiasm in the subject is much appreciated. I guess I'm looking to find more definitive and quantitative info directly involved with music education. It's obviously long pass crunch time for the Amercian economy and things are getting exponentially worse daily. We live in a time where everything has to add provable value or it suddenly becomes a economic nuisance. It seems as if things of aesthetic value are becoming more and more a pass time for the upper class...which unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last 4 years, is becoming smaller and smaller. SO again, where does that leave current and future music majors and makers looking to make a living off of their talents as supply is seemingly outwaying the implied demand?
Cutting a well rounded education, IMO, is probably one of the biggest reasons why this country's economy is in the poor state it's in right now. Folks in charge just don't make common sense decisions.
They say they want our kids to receive a world class education, but then turn around and cut funding for education, fire tons of teachers, and limit resources as a means to save money. And this is before they place OVER-emphasis on Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Don't get me wrong, those "3 Rs" are vital for our society to maintain. But when you cut everything else back and stump a child's educational growth and prevent him/her from becoming a well rounded individual, you are doing more harm than good. Point is, a well rounded education runs in sync with a world class education.
With that being said, Music and Music Education plays a vital role in the education of our children as well as help mold our culture...and we need quality Music Educators to teach quality Music Education.
It just sucks that our government wants to diminish the quality of our kids' education in order to try and right the wrongs of our economy...then have the nerve to call it a "world class education".
Well first off, EVERY career (in the middle class) is suffering in this economy. EVERY SINGLE ONE.
While we are trying to concentrate on the "core" curriculum, we are failing to realize that the aesthetic subject enhances the other subjects. Abstract thinking, connecting physical action with cognitive processing and understanding cultural differences are just a few aspects that are addressed in music education.
To answer your question, we as music educators will have to grasp on to concepts like those (mainly ones that cant be taught in the core subjects) to help "prove", for lack of a better word, our worth in society to go along with the success of performing ensembles. It is obviously alot of jobs being lost, but if people make an exodus to another career choice, all that will do is make the competition in that field greater and then have the same effect that we as music majors are having now.
Teaching period is a career that is not financially beneficial. I can't speak for others but l teach music because i love it. I enjoy seeing peoples lives change for the better n exposing students to places, genres & artists they nvr imagined existed. I also love my students like my own child (even when they partake of dumbness). That's why i teach music. I'm not in it for the money. I think that's part of our issues of educatin reform. So many people think teaching is a job. Flipping burgers at whataburger is a job but working with kids is a calling & people who don't have a genuine love for children shouldnt even consider it
Not to b funni or n e thing but i'd like to see wat facts u cud present to support these notions?
