Melrose & E Ocean Get In Here!

Ok everyone, here is the clip, I have great speakers and I have a great ear and musical knowledge...ask anyone on this sight and they can verify that. I love this battle, got me back in the spirit!!!!! I am commenting because Melrose is doing too much, please watch this clip with good speakers...not the speakers that came with your computer...either headphones or speakers with a subwoofer.

Here is what I thought:

From Prof. Brown, Director of Medgar Evers:

Medgar – Swamp- sloppy, not sure why it sounded like that…btones on the side the guy was coming up from and as you see that’s all btone/euph territory so the sound wasn’t captured.

Melrose-Hay- loud, very loud…louder than our Swamp…round 1 goes to Melrose.

Medgar-Who Do I Turn To Fanfare- that was blowin, mellos, btones, trombones, trumpets, tubas a little to far back and turnt sideways, I stand by what I said..if we were in battle formation…but this was freaking loud
if volume is what you want to judge.

Melrose- Neck- where are your trumpets, mellos and woodwinds? I hear trombones dominating this band, baritones sound nice, but they are blending too much with the trombone…why are the trombones and
baritones sharing parts? Tubas sound nice on this song, but the band overall is
just noise, we should be able to hear each part.

Medgar- Iesha- I can every section…but then I have good speakers. This was good, first note rough, but if you judging volume, this beat out neck.

Melrose- Swoop- who wrote this for you guys? The original song doesn’t sound like this, nor does JSU…the song is nice and I like how funky it is played. Btones killing at the beginning, trumpets to weak for the
low brass. Trombones sound nice, and I can tell this is the baritones favorite
song. Trumpets and mellos sound weak at the bridge and the music sounds jumbled
up…once again just noise. Tuba’s nice job.

Medgar – Nothing on You- beatufiul arrangement…trumpets should have been way stronger…but I appreciate the color with the woodwinds and trombones playing together. Can tell the tubas know this song well. During the
first strain it was nice articulation of the part. Background quarter notes from
mellos and trumpets sounds nice. I hear a trumpet taking something up. Bridge
of the song was just beautiful, you can every instrument’s voice. Baritones and
little strong after the bridge…mellos hanging in hard with the btones/euphs,
tubas nice job all the way to the ending…but trumpets wtf..where yall go?
Drumline nice blend with the band. Best of the arrangement of the night hands
down.

Melrose- We Jammin’ Bob Marley?- started off nice!...but after the intro it’s just sloppy. Baritones & Sousaphones seem to be this bands strongest section, but the music sounds all jumbled up. What the hell was
the drumline doing? Couldn’t even keep tempo, not a good look and like the guy
in the audience says at 7:12 “They need a lip break.” No such thing in a face
to face battle…that wasn’t a good song choice to battle with. After the break
the band came in a lot stronger and clearer, I could actually make it out,
ending was dominated by btones. Trombones, trumpets, mellos, losing steam.

Medgar- Unthinkable- First note wtf?? Trumpets was is necessary to come in that loud on a ballad?? Very sweet sound and I can even make out the woodwinds…trumpets WTF…tubas WTF? But I see the tubas pulled it
together…one trumpet tryna take something up and isn’t working! At the bridge
they pull it back together. Trumpets & Baritones together is nice. Trumpets
& Trombones on chords, while btones take it away, sounds nice, but slight
tempo problem. Nice trombones before the break. After the the break, the rest
of the band is chilling and the btones going for blood, but I can still make
out the sections…camera to close to the btones/euphs. Tubas wtf was that for
the last note? I get the idea of the ending, but it isn’t what it should have
been. Need to clean up this song..and the overall sound.

Melrose-Golden Time of Day- nice intro, drumline is back there grooving….some of us don’t know the music I can hear. Btones save this band. Tubas have nice parts and they playing too…camera right on them too. Song
sound likes random notes from trumpets and mellos what is that? Cut off early
why? You could have finished.

Medgar- Jigg- nice but ending was bad…and why are you humping low notes? Energy made this song and wow they turned and played as they walked away..but the ending damnit! Right before the ending the band was
beasting foreal.

All in all, I have to give the battle to Medgar, but they need to practice cleaning things up and they will be a great band. Melrose at this point you should triple the trumpet section and keep the  numbers of lowbrass you have…6 mellos would
do you some good too. Melrose is very sloppy, and exposed, could benefit from
more battles. In order for Melrose to smash they’d have clean up the music and
get larger. Medgar gets the W, but Medgar needs to practice more before they
got up against a heavyweight. I also noticed that Medgar has some endurance,
nice job both bands.

If you are really truly trying to make a point, and if you are truly trying to get better, listen to your own mistakes and be able to critique yourself, before you critique another band...this we are very good at.

Btw: I am the director of the Medgar band.

Good show and congrats. They really need to do a better job at judging. But that after battle.... Now that was a show. I was playing SOusaphone for Melrose. And all I got say is, you cud feel the intensity in the atmosphere. I don't know if you caught up with our band director, and indeed shook his hand, but that was a good battle in need of being shook on. Hope to see your school again,

i played btone fa melrose in that battle...love what you doing with medgar evers...big band...solid sound....only constructive crtiticism that i have...is to have those trumpets do long tones..im not trying to run your program..im onlyh giving my opinion..but overall..nice battle
  • sorry fixed...gnite all... i'll read it in the morning and comment if it's worth my time.
  • This was so bias, and Medgar was way more sloppy than Melrose. Great way of giving yourself the battle that you didn't earn!

Well as a member of the melrose high school band (mellophone player) i can honestly say that we shocked ourselves with this one, and with all respect those are just excuses.! We have battled in worse conditions and still gave it our all.! Just to inform the mellophone players they should be careful what they say because immediately after they talked all that "trash" they went down hill. which allowed our ona and a half mellophones conquer them with cleanliness.!-MELLO MADNESS

The was taken from a comment on youtube by half of your mellophone section. First of all It took us time to set up because we are too big to fit on an atl sidewalk. Yall played your Hay at us which was good. That was yall best song.

Then it went downhill from there with your elementary arrangement of swoop...this is how swoop really goes...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGMhwI2Xohk and if you want the real song here your go....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f35kEWueFwQ. I dont know if yall to bad to play the jsu arrangement or if your arranger is enrolled in the high school. Our mellos were clearly louder are better than your 2. When Our four of our 10 got in front yall two hid behind the tubas.

Yall then began play We jammin which sounded like the kindergardeners from the cartoon recess playing crap. Then yall when into a drumbreak that also sounded like just noise. Yall fell off after the first 3 songs. Then yall attempted to play jsu arrangement of Golden Time of Day which is suppose to sound like this...and here is a high
school...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o1PjTdsdx4. That also sounded bad because your lips began to die out. By then we couldnt even hear ur 2 mellos. Yall btones hold your band together.

Your guys then cut that off early and then we cranked Jigg at you. We clearly won that battle.
  • Yo kid your really an idiot i really think your looking at a different clip. Honestly your band is divided because half of yall are saying we sound great and the other half of ignorant players just wanna argue and not just take the l like a man. Explain why yall sounded like that on the so called arrangement of we jammin.Explain the drum break. Explain why i cant hear trumpets and mellos at Golden time of day. Yall sounded loud but very sloppy. Please explain the sloppiness?

  • Lets not talk about baby arrangements. Trumpets have no range whatsoever and tubas weren't even heard even though they purposely were given str8 power notes.

23 hours ago 2 @JSMLeadership Well since my director is a JSU legend, I will have to disagree with that statement on the trash talk. Harold J. Haughton Sr. said do the talking with your horns. All that other stuff doesn't need to be said if your handling business. Melrose was handling business in my opinion so that is all that needs to be said. Keep up the good work.

Now Lets Go!! Let me see what an unbias person said about Medgar!!!!
