What yall think?MOBILE, Ala. -- Gulf Coast Classic officials on Tuesday told Mobile City Council members that the annual college football game would be doomed if the city did not give the game an additional $200,000.Mobile Mayor Sam Jones last week proposed a budget for the upcoming fiscal year that would give $47,500 to the game and reserve another $200,000 that the council could give either to the Classic or to another sporting event that would create an economic impact for the city. The Classic received $275,000 in city funding last year, up from $40,000 two years ago. But the event, between Alabama State University and Southern University, was considered a disappointment, without much of a spike in attendance or economic impact for the city.Jones said organizers did not have a manager or a plan for this year's game at the time he finished the budget.Taylor Hodge, chairman of the Gulf Coast Classic Scholar & Sports Foundation, said he believed the game could still be a long-term success and bring in tourists and business to the city. But the foundation needs the extra $200,000 from the city to pay the schools what they're owed for last year's game and put together this year's contest, which is scheduled for Nov. 14."If we're not successful this year, it dooms it for next year," Hodge said, addressing the full council at its regular weekly meeting Tuesday.Hodge said he felt "shortchanged" by the mayor's budget proposal.Council members did not make any commitment one way or the other. Council President Reggie Copeland invited Hodge to come to a Sept. 15 meeting of the council's finance committee, which is scheduled to discuss the budget.Until last year, Alabama State left Montgomery once a year to play a home game in Mobile at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The opponent differed from year to year, and the game was called the Gulf Coast Classic. The city gave Alabama State $40,000 a year to help offset the cost of traveling down Interstate 65, while the opponent paid for its own travel costs, as it would for any away game.Last year, game officials decided to try to make the contest more like successful classics in New Orleans and Birmingham by locking in two teams that would play every year. The foundation offered Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., $250,000 a year and Alabama State $225,000 a year to enter into a two-year contract, with the option of playing one or two additional years. To help meet the game's $750,000 budget, the foundation requested $50,000 from the Mobile County Commission and $450,000 from the city of Mobile. The commission money came without a problem. But several City Council members balked at the significantly bigger price tag, in part because the city had never given the game more than $40,000 before, and the Classic had not proven to be a big draw.Proponents of the funding increase argued that the changes made would bring in enough new fans and tourism dollars to make it worthwhile. The council eventually compromised by giving the foundation $275,000.That left the foundation unable to pay the two schools the full amounts. Earlier this year, Southern's athletic director, Greg LaFleur, accused city officials of breaking promises.LaFleur said at the time that his school would play this year's Classic in Mobile, as it's a scheduled home game for Alabama State. But after that, he said, the school would have to take "a serious look as to how to proceed from here."

  • Seen this on the news the other nite and was like damn.... They shouldve just kept swaping JSU and SU out... Im glad I got to come home an play my freshman yr in the boom...

but I feel what they are really doing is making room for USA.. the jags lil football team
  • smh, thats so bootleg and unorganized. nobody really care about that game anyways.
just have both teams play the games at home.
  • you shouldn't believe everything you hear or read especially in mobile.this game is just receiving criticism because mobile is in danger of losing the senior bowl so council men and women are trying to take money away from this black game to try and save that game.if you do some research of this dilemma from the date of last years game til now you will see that the press has been makin their living off of this story.i'm a member of the mobile su alumni chapter and the game will happen.this is exactly what the white ppl want us to do.they want this game doomed so that money can be used for other things that don't interest our community.and for the record the mayor is givin the xtra $200,000 it was left out of the budget because he wasn't sure what the plan was for the classic
  • Thats exactly what they trying to do... I been going to this game since I can remember.. hell I grew up 2blocks away from Ladd.. Its pack every yr and Im sure 200k is nothing.. They just wanna do it for the Jags... btw they have a band..lol bout 160 co style tho
  • Greg you can save all that "Da White Man" crap. Its not even all about the "City Of Mobile"
The Sponsors are even "UNORGANIZED" they still owe SU/Bama St Money from Last year.
Here is another Article/Video about GCC.

The game is not making enough money. The sponsors were banking on the games being SOLD OUT and that never happened.
Last years game drew Under 20k fans. Not enough people attended the game for it to be successful. Which is why the game is in the "RED". On top of that the city is iffy about putting money into the game.
Its just jacked up and Bootleg from top to bottom. You can't tag the blame on the "DA WHITE MAN" and Mobile because they are not the only factors to this problem.
I dont see why SU wont just play the game at home anyways. They keep moving home games to other states (jackson, mobile) b/c they say they need to make more money because the athletic dept is cumbling financially. (which is on the verge of moving to D2 because of Budget Cuts in the state of LA) Thats right SU might go D2,which means no Swac for SU.

  • Reading and Comprehension is fundamental...

    1. Where in the article does it state that SU is "Considering" D2?
*Lomotey is clearing giving an outcome that could possibly occur, “if" monies aren't
    allocated to the athletic dept.
*SU moving to D2 isn't a "one" man decision...

    2. Southern has a "Foundation" that raises funds for the betterment of the University and its Students...
*As stated in the article, the foundation in the pass has distributed funds to
    balance the budget....
    3. The Board of Supervisors approved the budget with the deficit...
    *THE MONEY WILL BE ALLOCATED!!!
    -Bayou Classic revenue
    -Foundation Funds

THANKS FOR THE CONCERN--- but Southern University and A&M College has it covered...

Lets just say Southern did go D2, The SWAC would lose:
*The School with the biggest fan base-- "money maker"
--- Schools know when Southern comes to town they can expect to make money...
*The Biggest and most lucrative game in all of Black America " Bayou Classic"
*So before ya'll start "shu shuing" and getting excited... THINK ABOUT IT!!!
