More sound, More power, More range

Ok So this is my senior year in high school and for 4 years I've been trying to figure out how Southern University gets their sound. So I moved to Baton Rouge to get help from Dr.Greggs and he almost had me there until he left leadership. So the only thing I know of right now is long tones and it's sorta helping but I know there has to be more. I also heard of a process called whisper pitch and I'm trying to find out what that is. If you know or have any tips or advice on what I can do to get even louder on the baritone then I'd appreciate it if you would help me out!

  • Practicing!!!!
  • That's something I do constantly but I mean there has to be more because what I am doing seems to be taking a long time. But I guess patience is the key.
  • You won't figure out our sound until you are on the inside, amd being louder shouldn't be a main priority. Its icing on the cake.

Like Doc said tho, long tones, I'm sure he mentioned buzzing to you. Practice your 12 major scales. Please know them before you audition. Tongue up slur down. Practicing different tongue exercises (Tu-ka-to) or (Tu-ka-ta-ka). Practice saying those phrases as fast as you can. It helps to double and triple tongue. Play through some fundamental books so that you are a better sight reader. I'm not familiar with "whisper pitch" but I'm sure its a control exercise.

Doing those few things will take you a long way. If you make the band being more volume will come. Dont worry about that.
  • Thanks Jaren! I've been working on that ever since Doc first told me about it. I know all my 12 majors so now I'm just working on my minors. But I'll keep practicing on the scales long tones and buzzing too! Is Arbans famous methods for trombone/baritone a good book to use?
  • Yes. Very good method book!

  • How many Baritones do yall have this year?
  • wassup tavion.....long time no see
  • Also take a look at Remington's method for t-bone/b-tone.

My old bd used to explain whisper tone as play "pp" with the same intensity as "ff". breath control is the key. try the old exercise of keeping a piece of paper up on a wall with nothing but your breath!
