Nationwide Search for New Band Director Underway

Prairie View A&M University has launched a nationwide search for the next band director to lead the famed Marching Storm.

The decision to seek a new director is an opportunity for PVAMU’s Marching Storm to enhance its national reputation and set a new standard in university marching bands.

The University’s search is the latest in a number of initiatives adopted to ensure the band, which serves as a window to the University, continues to uphold the legacy of greatness for which it is known. This includes reviewing tryout scheduling, scholarship distribution and various other administrative aspects.

"We appreciate Professor McQueen’s contributions over the past years, and I believe this is the right time to transition our program with new leadership and a new direction," said President George C. Wright. Dr. Wright added, “The goal of this search is to set a new vision for the Marching Storm while ensuring that the band experience is rewarding for student members.”

According to President George C. Wright, the marching band’s new leader will be more than a music educator. The next director will be someone who can shape students both academically and socially while pushing them to higher levels of music performance.

Those interested in the position should contact the Office of Human Resources.

  • Question...

What was wrong with the last director you all had? :/

  • i agree with under thinker i mean pv have lost that clean sound but they now sound like a SWAC BAND. Not bad at all. Field shows havent changed at all but then again more may be going on in house. And why dont they have ppl in line? And what if the new BD DOES NOT CUT IT? how many asst did pv have? And mcqueen did what he could do seeing the same 3 or 4 bands a yr. Yet the president treating the football team like they god yet the storm been doing more. Smh. Gud luck pv.
  • PV hires outsiders????

  • prof Edwards was from Famu? i think right? I think These Tx colleges are interested more into making things bigger and better regardless if they are alumni or not. PV has a good alumni base compared to some universities, but I'm not sure if Prarie View is interested in keeping things in the family although that would be nice. I just hope that Storm members know that change will come and they can't avoid it like JSU seems to be doing. Education is the main goal and if a professor can give me, my brother/sisters, or family/friends a great one they deserve the job. my question is, why haven't the powers that be looked during Prof McQueen's interim term for a director? Isn't that the purpose for the interim tag? In addition PVU has put out some knowledgeable students, I wonder what they want in a Director of bands? I wonder will we see a change up of directors in the HBCU circuit to pursue the position.

  • Prof. Edwards (RIP) graduated from FAMU

    Prof. McQueen graduated from FAMU

Prof. Jones (Percussion) graduated from TnState

    Prof. Gordon graduated from PV

I am done with speculation though.  So many suggestions and ideas are being thrown around.  But we will see what things are like come bandcamp.

  • love my band and hope things turn out for the best!

  • This will be different.... Good Luck on the new search.. I support all the SWAC Bands...

  • Its time for a much needed change... Im sure things will turn out for the best... The students want someone who is going to push the standard of musicianship thats already been established... Not just for marching band, but for wind ensemble, the jazz combo, chamber brass etc.. There is alot of talented players here all around here at Prairie View.. However, the right leadership needs to be put in place for the program to flourish... Although I won't be in the ranks next season, I will defiantly keep my eyes and ears open for next seasons edition of the "Marching Storm"...

  • I hope it was no pun intended, but either way, he's right.. Our sound was one of our biggest selling points... It set us aside from the majority of the SWAC (not to say that other bands sound bad), Some people liked it, and some people didn't.. However, you are correct, Prairie View' sound was very unique..
