Hello. My name is Patrick Batiste. I know how to play all brass instruments and a few woodwinds (soon to increase in number). I am a senior at Edna Karr in New Orleans, LA. Long story short, there are numerous SWAC colleges offering me scholorships but I must audtion in order to receive them. I know all of my major scales and am solid at sight reading but i have to play a prepared peice. Can anyone help me choos a piece that shows off my tone as well as technique? How do i know what makes for a good audition piece? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

first off what instrument are you going the play for your audition?
I would try In Storm And Sunshine or Circus Bee if you really want to show off your talents
The local music store where you get your band supplies should also have solos available for your instrument. If you're getting ready for audition, you need a piece that is Grade 4 or higher, and displays your ability to play fast and technical as well as slow and lyrical.
If they don't have it in stock, they can order it and have it to you in a matter of days.

I'm going to most likely play my main instrument (trumpet).
Need Help Getting Ready

We cant really tell you what to play because its all about your style and your pros and cons. Make sure when you look for a piece, choose something that compliments your strong points. If you want to show your technique, choose a sonata that moves quickly. If you wanna to show your musical ability and phrasing, grab something slow. And if you are playing multiple instruments, I would audition on two if possible. It gives you options and makes you really stand out. A college audition is like a job interview, you want them to offer you the highest salary possible. also try to audition for several different colleges not just the ones with the best band. You may make a big impact on a lesser music program and make more scholarship money in the process.
