  • I think the style is similar....power, power, n more power. Lota dat has to do wit SWAC nfluence wit strong emphasis on SU!
  • I believe we are very alike due to our similar demographics and musical backgrounds. The only real difference is the size of the bands. Music, especially Jazz and Showstyle bands in NO is more culturally competent than Detroit, Making it more prevalent vs Us Detroiters who either fell in love wit it at an early age or found it as an outlet from the stresses of inner-city life. However, if you take NOASB, chop it down to bout 30 people, or take the DICB and bring the numbers up 100+ you will basiclly have the same band. But we are a little bit more technical due to our very big Concert Season!! lol
    • that sir, is a DAMN lie
  • n.o. like no other
  • lmao @ Damien. Yeah bra I know.

Funny part is that I was really with him up until the last sentence. After I read that I was like aaaaawwwwwww mayun, c'mon docta!

  • The only people who agree with this are the ones from Detroit. Detroit has some horrible sounding bands so I know concert season is a hott mess. If there are any clips to prove otherwise, please post.

    • You stand corrected. Y is it that Detroit people always hafta prove sumtn to u down south hill billies?!??

The link is frm the ONLY urban/black high skool band to b invited to Carneige Hall consecutively. To b honest, all u down south bands hav is a football n parade season. Evn ur "top notch" wind symphonies pales n comparision to the things ive witnessed in my time in Detroit. Yes, most is history now bcuz of things byond most of our control. N fundraising only works wen there r funds to raise. Detroit is probably one of the worst hit areas thru our economic downfall. So hav sum respect n quit tryna continue to kick a city while its down cuz wen its up...trust the difference is ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. carry on....

  • Detroit Schools was a recruiting base for quality student musicians for a long stretch until the drastic cuts which in turn killed many band programs. Prior to the cut, middle and high schools had successful programs. IMO,..it is difficult to compare the two because Detroit music programs for the most part are non-existent. The city went from having as many as 30 programs around the city to now only 2-4. If I had to find any similarity with Detroit bands I would say there is still ambition and desire for music up there. Sad to say, but many of the students (compared to 90's and below) are not interested in music. This is due to having no elementary or middle school programs set up to introduce the art of music to students. I became fascinated about music at a early age and it was DPS that allowed me to become open to the art and other forms of art as well.

New Orleans has a drive and passion for music that not even Katrina could touch. That city is historical when it comes to music. So is Detroit but not as New Orleans. For Detroiters, we had to venture out to witness an HBCU band first hand. For New Orleans folk, they just needed to go downtown or drive an hour to witness HBCU bands. Exposure is a hands up that New Orleans had and has on Detroit. Also the numbers in bands in New Orleans are far greater than Detroit. Now-a-days they are glad to have a band program. Detroit bands would be considered big if they had 60 students. New Orleans average is 100+ members.

In sum I believe Detroit can not be compared to New Orleans at this juncture. Detroit is facing very hard times right now and the band world is damn near non-existent. However as the old song goes..we fall down but we get up! In due time Detroit will be back on the scene but it will be sometime from now. Id say give it about 5 yrs and then this comparison will hold more validity for discussion.

    • Ohio or Michigan???

I mean, theyre not HBCUs but for the sake of musicality, the kids should be exposed to something. Kids dont need to see an HBCU everyday to have a decent band.

And I keep preaching about those cuts. When you depend on other peoples money thats what happens. Which is why a strong booster program and parental involvement is crucial to any programs success. Bands must fund raise year round to keep up. My HS band held at least 2 fundraisers a month, 2 parents specifically did the planning that.

  • I have a few friends who played in bands in Detroit and Pontiac. In one word...no. N.O and Det are completely different.
