New Orleans folks..

if you are in high school (or went to high school down there) did yall ever get tired of going against the same type of band every week? it seems like all bands down there are based off SU. i know yall hate FAMU and Cookman down there but wouldnt yall like to go against a band like SWD or IC Norcom just one time?

  • well first off, tha school I went to (St. Aug) had a totally original identity, but to answer your question no not really cuz there were always a lot of good bands (at least when I marched 01-05 and definetely b4 that)....for us (St.Aug) it was interesting and different when we went out of town and saw a band w/ a different style from everybody else at home, but at tha same time we didn't like it (or at least I didn't). Everybody in New Orleans sees any band that dont have a SU based and/or New Orleans style (few add ins to SU style) as country and we hate it, so we would rather see each other on a regular basis than to see other bands that dance all day, but when, do all kinda chants and worst of all have quads or quints
  • lol..i was on facebook and saw pics from a parade down there and it seemed like everybody tried to be like SU.

but from what i was told a while back SU got their style from yall! (St.Aug). i dont know how true that is

  • Many Opportunities have happened Pre-Katrina that were Hit & Miss Occasions.
Our Band environment is huge as far as competition goes, so bands that don't travel still get in on all the Action.

But wish It could happen all the time, because I personally feel that N.O's Competition isnt the Band Around the Block, It's the Band In Texas, GA, FLA and Detroit who are Currently 10x Better than Our bands .. Putting Our bands up againts them now would be a Wake Up Call....

.. Oh Man... SU didn't get their style from St. Aug....Back in the 50's and 60's BD's from The Southern region from the took part in Seminars in Michigan to Learn 8 to 5 and Box drilling. After Incorporating those Methods to their programs, They basically used their own Creative Methods to Bring these bands to life..

As for New Orleans, the Origin of Our standard marching unit is Based off of St Aug's program. Unlike Southern, Our Units consist of Color guard, Cheer-leaders, Dance Team, Majorettes, Flag Twirlers as well as the Band Itself.

It's not that we hate those other bands, It's just that The average New Orleans bandhead (Pre Internet) was only Exposed to Southern and Grambling, ... and We'd Favor SU more just because they don't have Quints... Therefore making that band Less Country.. when we see SU, we See a Product of New Orleans.. Their Influences on Our bands are petty much equal to The Things our bands have done as it regards to their success.

I strongly believe that New Orleans' band environment set the Tone of the SWAC, when you leave this city, you expect the competition to be equally aggressive to create a Battle worth Discussing ...

Back to The Initial Subect at hand . Putting a New Orleans area band up against a Atlanta band only gets attention because Of the Method Behind the Madness, and Not the Madness itself..

The Battle Would be Less about "Who's Better Than Who".. But "Who's Style Makes the Better Band"... and yet that argument is endless because its all Personal preference.. lol

I Love This band stuff .lol
  • Well, in the 90's we didn't really get tired simply because that was all we knew. The out of town bands were automatically labeled country, because they did things differently (i.e. shaking their butts and gyrating). However, I don't really look down on dancing anymore, because when you're anywhere outside of New Orleans, people love it. But in New Orleans, it's plain'ol country.

When SWD came to New Orleans in 96, they were unlike anything we (St. Aug) had ever seen before (i.e. 300-400 members). We had never heard of them, with the expection of the BOTB radio and television advertisement. Even with that, we just knew that they were SUPER BIG, which naturally brought about a little fear, but we didn't know how they sounded. When we heard them play, we realized they were similar to FAMU in a good and bad way. The good was their instrumentation, which allowed them to play beautiful ballads or slow songs. However, like FAMU, their upbeat songs were blandly arranged (sound like a orchestra trying to play funk music) and they were very country on the field, which in New Orleans was not popular. They danced and shaked their butts the whole fieldshow, made smiley faces and other shapes, and basically drilled by following the leader. LOL! When we saw them in person, we realized they were just big, thats all--they weren't a real concern anymore.

Frankly, I'm torn between yes and no. Yes I would have liked challenging more bands with different styles, such as SWD, more often. But at the same time I wouldn't have, simply because bands like SWD bore the heck out of me. LOL! However, there are some good bands that I would love to have as competition in New Orleans, because I believe they would challenge the N.O. to be better, like Miller Grove (a 80 piece band with a Dynamite sound) and the Brooklyn Steppers.
