After watching the clips of the New Orleans Middle School BOTB I am happy to see such programs still exist. I was amazed at the range of some of those kids. 7 and 8th graders hitting Gs and As above the staff is impressive. I am going to show these clips to our fine arts manager of HISD and tell her this is why New Orleans Band programs are doing much better than some of the other area programs. Its ridiculuous and outright embarassing that these Middle Schools are better than more than half of our high school bands in HISD (not calling any names.)On last year, ONE DIRECTOR took it upon himself to contact TEA to complain about middle school students doing parades instead of only focusing on tone quality. It lead to a long trail of reccomendations and HISD was ordered to stop middle school bands from marching period. NOTE: He is anti showband. Anyway hopefully New Orleans has started something great with this BOTB in Middle Schools regardless of who won, regardless of how the bands looked or sounded. At least you got your kids there performing in front of a crowd. This is a GREAT FOUNDATION for Music Education...

The first school in the Blue (siwell) was from Jackson Mississippi, we were glad to see them There.
Here in N.O. I have noticed that the middle school directors are either Fresh out of College or BD's who've come out of Retirement to bring back our HS feeder system. New Orleans of the Past Relied on feeder systems and now with a lack of schools we rely on the Middle schools you saw in that video to prepare the kids for High school. at the rate its going I believe our middle school bands will be the reason N.O comes back strong.
Now Truth is, There were many things wrong with The 3 N.O bands in the Video. but I was happy to even be apart of the event because it showed that this is where it began for folks like ME.. during my time in Middle School,.we didn't have Middle School BOTB's , We actually had Football Games so had a reason to try to Be Good and Learn Feild Precision and The likes.. There were so many other schools in the city to compete with as well.
Also. With the power of the Internet, these Middle schoolers are exposed College band at a Young age. I was at one of the schools the day before the battle. a 4th grader asked what schools I marched for. When I said I marched for Texas Southern.he started talking to me about TSU vs Other bands and How he Likes the Tubas and Certain songs.and . I really Impressed me because he really knew what he's talking about. .LOL.. I wasn't exposed to colleges back then. so for me I felt that this dude was Already Preparing for becoming a HBCU bandsmen ..lol With college bands On his mind that's a good thing.
Our Middle schools start at the elementary level so they allow 4th through 8 to take part in Band. before Katrina it wasn't like that. with the way our school systems are, the bands seem to come and go. so the truth of the matter is. the Battle really came to Life only to motivate the kids to stay in band. The Crowd Turnout was Great. none of the directors expected that big of a crowd. especially because It was the Last Day of the Jazz Festival Weekend.. so For a First Time Event. it went PRETTY WELL.
It makes me feel Old ..LOL but I love it THIS IS THE FUTURE HBCU BANDSMEN!! ..lol!
Goldy, I remember you saying that before about the disgruntled BD that said it was wrong for Middle Schools to march in parades. Was it a particular school he was referring to because Ortiz has been in every parade since MLK youth. Also some of these Middle schools in other districts (Ollie for example) are marching showstyle and are distined to go to a corpstyle school. If say, Pershing were allowed to march would said BD have a problem with this? And is this the same joker that got put in a school that had a band when he got there and now they don't have anything, for the sake of a style? I thought he got his walking papers? I think he looked down the street and seen that monster in the making in the making on Broadway and started hating! Ortiz, Stevenson and Deady kids are not even goona look at that school on Howard!

That is his opinion (Goldy) if he feels that the high schools in houston are garbage and he is impress with the middle school in New Orleans. Sure they are not perfect they are all just starting out. They are fresh out of the beginners class and they are moving at a fast pace. Hell some of those Houston bands that march in mardi gras parades in N.O. were straight up garbage 99.9% of those houston bands. Don't even mention Mr. Ford he gets no love in the N.O. anymore tell him to stay in houston. He did good at Phillips junior high but destroy Kennedy's program. The only band in Houston that is handling business is TSU and you know it with 50% or more of those band member coming from the N.O.
But don;t worry they will get better in the future.

Naw man.. I didnt say they sounded good. They have a lot of work to do but the thing is :THE MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS ARE OUT THERE AND INVOLVED. Thats the hard thing to find in Houston. I was impressed with some of their ranges too. Those same students coming into a high school with a hard working band director would come out to be a great situation. Being in HISD we often have to start high school students from ground zero. Ground Zero being "This is a trumpet and this is how you play it." It is difficult when the majority of your band is on that level. Actually this was my first year not having to do that.
And Tonemaster, I didnt say Houston bands are garbage. (Even if they were I wouldnt say that) What I was saying was that its just good to see middle school bands period. In Houston, more than half of the minority middle schools dont have bands. That makes the high school directors have to bust their azzes just to get 30 members. I was just applauding New Orleans for putting their middle schools out there. by the way Mr. Ford is doing pretty good out here in Houston.

Im glad they are just doing something. I went to one of my middle schools and all they were doing was sitting there throwing paper and talking crazy to the teacher. I asked them if they play, they said "sometimes". Then I asked them if they practice after school, they said "Hell naw". So when I told them they have to practice after school to be in high school band, they looked at me crazy. Some of them even asked me "why does the high school band practice after school?"
I can see 09-10 is going to be a hell of a year for me.

well the high schools that get these kids will not have to worry about jitters they have a working understanding of their instruments, can read music, already know how to march, and have a clearer view of the big picture...

Mr. Ford has very little clout around here...Wheatley was never a force, never participated in anything worth while except for Tucks mardi gras parade, never read their scores on the LMEA boards(concert festival), heard about them at the archdiocean fest (concert Festival)...
Not to mention he played a very big part in to use your words "destroying" one of the best programs in the south...

In Houston, more than half of the minority middle schools dont have bands. That makes the high school directors have to bust their azzes just to get 30 members. I was just applauding New Orleans for putting their middle schools out there. by the way Mr. Ford is doing pretty good out here in Houston.

well the high schools that get these kids will not have to worry about jitters they have a working understanding of their instruments, can read music, already know how to march, and have a clearer view of the big picture...
these kids specifically are already battle tested, are used to being competitive
if all them little kids can do is blow ..then..let them bugers stay were they at.....

IN MY "OPINION" these middle schools need to lear how to develope good tone,articulation,sight reading ,and musical skills first...
do you honestly think that the directors out here aren't teaching that? dude give some credit the kids are playing albiet with mistakes, there were many Middle Schools that didn't put there kids out there that day, the directors put their faults out there on display for all to see...
do you see fort bend..middle schools with A full marching band.......hisd use to have dowling...and they did it all..not just all that blowing crap...
No I didn't see fort Bend or Dowling... I looked and couldn't find anything on the sport or youtube or showtime
man MR ford at Wheatley was A middle school BD in THE N.O....and he dosent think that these middle school in N.O. sound good eaither....
Mr. Ford has very little clout around here...Wheatley was never a force, never participated in anything worth while except for Tucks mardi gras parade, never read their scores on the LMEA boards(concert festival), heard about them at the archdiocean fest (concert Festival)...
Not to mention he played a very big part in to use your words "destroying" one of the best programs in the south...
John F Kennedy look at the clips of John F Kennedy in New Orleans in 2002 then look at them in 2005 the difference is Ford...
plus if you wanna get down to the nitty gritty..pershain, jhonson,parker(ELEM),M.C. Williams,Welch,Fleming,shoot you know what 80% of our middle school can do more than handle them they would destroy.......this makes NO sence...I will never...lower my standars ..just to think Another band is good.....that what everybody doing now A days..oh such and such blowing...... HELL NAWL.......bands now just plain suck..and that gose for the (N.O.) too.....
Looks like We are going to have to come to Houston, maybe they can teach us a few things...
if you kats want better bands..do like (MR J) FROM WORTHING, GIBSON,T2,THORTON,and A cupple others and DEMAND IT.....every one wants things to be back they way there were well DAMIT!!!!...GET UP AND FIX..IT STOP LETTING THESE KIDS GO AROUND THINKG TRASH IS OKAY...
