Hey guys, this is my second year in marching band, and I have loved it so much since I joined. I am now a section leader (but not captain yet), and for the first time, I've been feeling like it hasn't been as fun as last year. I was a rookie last year, so every day I was just learning and getting better, and I loved shows and traveling to competition. This season, we've only had two games so far, and our first competition isn't until 2 weeks from now. I am a high school junior now, and like I said I've been having thoughts like "This isn't so fun right now," maybe because I feel like my section isn't having fun or I feel like I have to make sure everyone is ready. I'm not stressed, it's just I need to keep the flame alive and stuff like that. I love music, I play guitar and I love listening to music, I just want to be sure I love band if I plan on doing drum corps after high school. I'm not considering quitting, I'm pretty much asking for motivation from band geeks all around. Any advice for making my section fun as heck, and staying happy with what I do? Thanks everyone I'm in drumline btw, this is my first year in upper battery, played bass last year

  • where do you live at?

  • Being a leader in a section is where the fun becomes All work it's something you must endure if you'd like to continue a future in music as a leader. everything you've been through up to this point. is the reason you're here now. Don't quit.  you are the leader.

  • I think once you take a look at collegiate music programs the fire in your eyes will be re-ignited. College is sooo awesome for musicians.

Imagine being able to study and practice your instrument all day long (and some long nights) with amazing musicians beside (fellow students) and above (instructors) you.

    You're percussion? Me too.

The HBCU I went to had sooo much percussion equipment; it was amazing! Imagine a drumset in a whisper room that you can bang on all day without disturbing (well, to an extent). You will be studying percussion full-time (alongside your general studies, theory, ensembles, piano and brass class).

Sounds cool? It is! However, like anything cool there will be stressful times. You WILL get headaches from having to memorize pieces. However, good percussion instructors will start with your fundamentals in the first semester and build you up.

High School is NOTHING like Corps or Collegiate band. Comparing my experiences; HS was a lot more stressful than college.

  • every year in band will be different. some better than others. #keepPUSHING
