Well yea, im knocking lolNow we all know how every band [good or bad] holds their own respective band camps to prepare the members for the upcoming season. That's all good but whats up with these high schools starting to hold camps for students outside of their feeding schools? It's a bit odd to me because I have never seen this happen before. Please explain. Now here's my next issue, the schools I see advertising these "open" camps...A lot of the high school bands advertising these "open" camps are great but there's a few bad apples and it's borderline false advertising if you ask me.Now I'm no expert but look, I know a "so-so" program when I see one. And I see these "so-so" programs advertising things like..."We will teach you fundamentals of whatever""We will teach you proper techniques for playing/marching""We will teach you discipline, showmanship, and leadership skills"Look!- You cant hold a Marching Fundamentals Clinic if your band didnt exactly look all that good on the field the prior year. Your own band members cant even march correctly so how you gonna teach me?- You cant hold a Percussion Clinic if your percussion section isn't exactly hittin' it.And leadership? HA!How can you advertise about teaching proper fundamentals & techniques at a "band camp" when your current band hasn't shown any of the qualities that you claim will be taught at the camp?So look... Send your band (or director in some cases) to get the proper training. Take a few years to polish your band... THEN hold a "open" band camp and invite students out of your zone. But this is just my opinion lol, maybe someone with an advance music education [College] can clear this up for me.

  • I totally agree with yu
  • Sadly a few directors do it as a ploy to try to convince to leave their own band to join their band. Its a cheap tactic. i can understand if its a few schools who get together to have a one or two day camp but an open high school camp is askin for trouble.

I have been a victim of it before. When a I worked at Sam Houston (10 yrs ago), we invited MacArthur to come join us with a jazz band clinic at our school. Next thing we know, our trumpet players were skipping our rehearsals and going to MacArthur every day. When the head band director Mrs. Mitchell (formerly Mrs. Rollins) found out, all I can say is it wasnt pretty at all. I say when a band director gets that gutt feeling about something, go with your gut. Ni$$as who have problems building their programs will try anything to hurt yours and build up their own.
  • I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed this trend...
