I'm sorry yall but I just had to voice my opinion..I have been to ALL 78 HBCU Marching Band rooms.. Seen everyone perform, and been on the BAND Battle fields for a while now. Some love me, others hate me, but you got to RESPECT my experience and knowledge of this here game! I see at least 120 halftime shows daily.. for a living..for those of you that do NOT know what I do...CATCH UP..lol Anyways, I just watched St. Augustine HS 82, SWD 93, Southern U 85, FAMU 88, NCA&T 84, JSU 83..and the flip side FAMU 09, SU 09, NCA&T 09, and several others...SMH WHAT ARE WE DOING PEOPLE?? WAKE UP!! I know it's a different time, but DAMN!!! Our craft (HBCU marching band) is suffering from Technology & just plain ole' LAZZYNESS!! I remember homecoming when we had a parade, pre-game show, halftime show, and post game show! lol You had to be in shape. Does anyone have heart anymore..or is everyone just marching for money? Please share your opinions and answers with me and tag others to also share with me. Musically Yours, DJ AEA #1 Are these "internet" gangsters really reppin what we fought, suffered, and bled for? #2 I thought if you were a drum major you were a leader & at least played an instrument? #3 What happened to REAL marching? #4 I thought it was a bad thing for you to sit on the sideline, but play in the stands? #5 Since when did bands get a "required" water / beverage break? #6 The drum section does not have to stand up and play with the band anymore? #7 The MARCHING Band does NOT require you to know a MARCH? #8 It is ok to wear your band pants sagging or have the band hat w/ plume on backwards? #9 Whichever band leaves the stadium first looses the band battle regardless of how they sound? #10 A plain white T- Shirt is a form of hazing now? #11 College Bands are accepting people who NEVER played an instrument before?.. smh #12 Bandsmen in sections can outplay their section leaders? #13 Bands MUST do a dance routine EVERY show? #14 Bands are still allowing "non students" to march in 2010? smh #15 8 to 5 is obviously NOT the "in" concept anymore...so what is?

  • Interesting. Exactly what is he referring to when he says technology?
  • dang book...u hit this one home. Really i think its one major problem is that make up all of these other problems. The main issue with my generation is alot of us aren't getting properly taught the CORRECT way a BLACK MARCHING BAND is suppose to be. I feel that we aren't getting taught what we really stood for in the past and the true herritage of our style. My generation is only getting the so called "beasting" mentality of marching band. This is not totally due to the lack of quailty teaching; technology is mostly to blame. We can only learn from the examples that we see. Its really the same issue that we have in the black community today, if the older men are not there to teach the younger men to respect our black women and to provide for them the right way how will we ever learn. Convert that concept to band...if the past generation don't teach us (the importance of fundamentals such as playing posture, knee lift, stationary 90's, 8 to 5,s,and musicanship as a whole) who will. I am getting more knowledgeable about black marching bands now only because i realized my own ignorance, and i know i can't be a great leader if I'm am ignorant toward my own craft.
  • 9 , 12 an 13 For REAL!!!!!
  • Throw 1 in there too....
  • ALL OF THEM....9, 12 an 13 tho....
  • I definitely feel what he's saying, but....there is a limit to what can be done to rectify the problem. Marching bands can still be good, and even great, in 2010, but the overall mentality is not the same across the board.
  • I think the bigggest problem with today's generation is discipline.

Discipline leads to work ethnic, creativity, focus, practice......its basically the foundation of anything we need and want to do as a marching band. Not only are students losing discipline, but its getting harder by the day to enforce discipline. A law suit is involved as soon as a student gets zipped for not being on their stuff.......its rediculous. Parents will push for their kid to be apart of the band, but not push for their kid to be a leader in the band. Why wouldn't you want your child to be the best at his/her craft?! Never understood that......

Its like students just want to be apart of something, but don't really have a passion for what they are doing....

  • That's some deep shit.

Now I wasn't born until '92, but I watch a shit load of HBCU videos and I can STILL tell a difference.

It's how the players are brought up I guess. If they are brought up with a mentality for performances, then that's what they will be good at. But if they were brought up with a mentality for beastin' on the other band (like me) then that's what they're gonna do.
