  • Langston Hughes and Mundys Mill are gonna start spicing things up for a few people as well.
  • Can we all please call this thread what it really is: The Langston Hughes wants to be recognized thread… like come on, dude, how obvious can you get? Nevertheless, I'll play.

As someone has already pointed out, the fact of the matter is the elite bands of DeKalb (Ga) are elite for a reason: they have a proven track record of being better than all others, period! Yes, it's true, some of them may have an off year here and there, but what band doesn't? And if we're really putting things into perspective, even in an "off year" it doesn't affect anyone outside of their group because even in an off year they stand head-and-shoulders above the rest of the pack.

Let's be real about it, Langton Hughes is no better than Cedar Grove, and Cedar Grove is no better than Towers, who is no better than BTW, Lithonia, or Douglass. And none of these schools can face Mays, who might I add, can't hold a bucket next to the Atlanta elite. Mays have a difficult enough time dealing with the likes of Columbia and Tucker: that says it all! Furthermore, on any given year that Mays even attempt to take on the likes of MLK, Redan, Stephenson, or Southwest DeKalb, we get a feel for why Mays is still, just Mays.

As for the surrounding counties:Like anyone else who either had the pleasure of being taught by or working with his dad,  I love Lil' D. and I want his program to do well, but dad or no dad, let's be real about his band: Mundys Mill suck! Like seriously, they suck!  I'm not saying this jokingly or to be mean; like for real, they seriously suck! I went to one of their games and had to leave before the second quarter (that's how bad it was). I went to Waffle House. As for the rest of the Southside (Cobb and ClayCo): If the best they can offer is Lovejoy and Marrow...next topic!

Arabia has size, and that's it! Arabia's festival show wasn't any better than Lithonia's. And I  dare say Lithonia's was far better than Arabia's, and Columbia's crushed them both. Group by group, Arabia's drum majors suck, the low brass is weak, the upper brass clearly struggles with simple arrangements, the percussion is sloppy (give it another year and they will be the worst in DeKalb), the dancers- they look like a bad imitation of the Dolls- how many times have we seen that? Get my point? Arabia needs focus on Arabia before they can even think about taking on any band worth mentioning.

All of that being said, the JV bands are JV bands for a reason: They exemplify JV'dom. They perform on a second-class level. I'm not trying to be mean, but it needs to be said. The ONLY school I could possibly see shaking some things up would be Columbia, but you only have to sit in on five minutes of one of their practice sessions to see that it will never happen...talk about dysfunction.

The three bands to watch are Stone Mountain, Cedar Grove, and Clarkston, not because they present any real threat to the elite bands, but because they have the potential to own the JV group. Stone Mountain is proving that quality is better than quantity and Cedar Grove in another year (and possibly another band director) will begin to see that they have always had heart and skill; what they lack is guidance! Clarkston has done an about-face. CKT is growing, they sound great, and the kids want to be better. I give Clarkston another year and they will be doing battle with Mays and Columbia.
