Playing styles and Techniques

i noticed a lot of marching bands(high school and college) are playing out of content these days. who cares who hears you-what u want them to do is feel u. its no different from Jennifer Hudson's singing to Kenny G's smooth ways on the sax. breathe from within and use ur body as an insrtument. the correct tounge position, a pointed chin, good posture, and an open throat will always do the trick. believe me, there will be more coming out of ur bell than ur spit valve.  air should not fill the cheek areas(where is the air going).when u fill ur gut with air, ur diaphram acts as a govenor(support). the cold water effect is a technique u use when u want to take in air quickly without slowing down the tempo. middle brass such as t-bones and b-tones are the meat of the band. lush chords and firm tones from these two will make a song reveal itself even more so.

  • i'm not an instructor..i'm a current college student who played in high school back in the 90's..it all goes back to the basics...
  • Oh ok yea i feel you.
  • Yeah, but most of these bands you're talking about, SWAC since this is a predominantly SWAC based community, don't care about those techniques anymore anyway. lol
  • i remember in middle school our director would be like LET IT COME FROM YOUR DIAPHRAGM.. PUT THAT MUSCLE TO WORK!..
