Over the past few days I have really been studying the 80's and 90's and... WOW!!! I apologize for claiming to be a "BANDHEAD" and not knowing enough of my history... Right now, I'm studying, of course, TxSU and SU... I thought I knew a lil bit about Texas Southern being thats my home school but really my education only took me back as far as the mid 90's...To all my peers who call themselves "BANDHEADS" please take a trip through History and see where these HBCU's really came from and what seeds they have planted along the way to produce the reputation they have now...side note: I know that our (TxSU) football team sucks but with a band like we had in the 80's and early 90's why in the HEYALL do we not support them now... I watched the clips from 1983 when they played SU in Mumford and was blown away at how many people were in the stands... TxSU was huge back then and both schools put on a SHOW!!!!Shout out to MR. TAPEMASTER...

they (txsu) had just messed up going to japan and stealin everything but the mountains, got put on probation for years and I was never able to hear them in person or play against them. i wouldnt mind hearing them in person now.
LOL!!!! I know that story, and although it's not funny I find myself still giggling here and there... It actually wasnt as bad as they made it... just the fact that they got caught knowing that the U.S. Media was watching was dumb as hell... But from what I know it wasnt the entire band, just a few knuckle heads that didnt realise what a blessing it was to just be over there in the first place... I hate it happened, maybe we would still have the support of the city and state...
Its been a hard road since then from what I've experienced from watching them growing up... From the school administration, to creditation to all the lil scandles that happend behind closed doors... This program has been fighting for quite some time... I have ALOT of respect for the HEART these guys show every year... Their will to rebuild and cement a solid foundation is inspiring at best and I cant wait to see them at full steam... My fav years from the last decade have to be 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007... I have a good feeling about 2009... If we can get some consistency we'll be straight...
This is a great post. Although I went to PV, I watched TXSU be one of the best of the 80s then disappear to nothing and rebuild. It has been quite a road for Prof. Lee and the Ocean of Soul. I really hate how the media blew things out of proportion and still blow things out of proportion. Every time something happens, the whole world has to come down on TXSU.
I think TXSU has not lost support because they still generate a fair crowd. Its just that in Texas, people are not attending football games or showing support to the bands like they used to. The Labor Day Classic in the 80s and 90s was a Big Thing. People planned for it months ahead of time but now, I have yet to see Reliant filled.
All I can say to the Ocean of Soul and Marching Storm or any other HBCU Band is just keep up what you are doing. Theres nothing like an HBCU Football Game and Halftime regardless of who it is. You have no idea how many children are looking up to you guys. And Funk Train crabs, Im seeing you guys a little bit too much..
I'm glad to see you learning more and paying closer attention to your band's history. All high school students should learn as much about the band of their choice's history BEFORE they decide to enroll. Also, more bands should make learning history a part of the crabbing process. Instead of just trying to humiliate crabs (which does have its purpose LOL), make them learn dates, important band alumni, famous sections of note, etc.
With the process of studying band histor, it gives a better insight into understanding the greatness of HBCU's. The Marching Band is the voice of an Insitiution. Without these bands making wonderful contributions of gaining respect and popularity, not many of us peers would not bother to attend HBCU's despite the novel achievements through academics and pioneers who've attend before us. The marching Band is my sole reason why I decided to attend an HBCU. I desire to listen to music I grew up to on the stands or on the field and in addition, being around the band opened my horizens to accept even more of my identity. Watching the older videos also makes it easier to critique the ound of most bands of today with the ones of the past, especially my instiution, The GREAT Bethune-Cookman University (B-CC). I also concur with the lecturing of a unit's past to incoming crabs in which it will enhance their interest & passion to being part of that band. Much thanks for this forum discussion.
Funkie...da*n that. First off...I don't babysit Boomers. I'z tellz 'em how it is. That's the tough love they don't get from the other 8 SWAC schools.
Second....It's football season and certain bands have to get right if they're ALWAYS claiming #1 or #2 spot in everything. Well, "everything" includes "everything before 2k". Making the SWAC look bad when you claim you're one of the most storied programs...yet, you almost NEVER bring up anything before 2k, besides 1990.
The thing is...some of them will think Im smacking. But, Im not. That's OK. DT has plenty enough knowledge...and, a big shoe horn to force-feed, if need be....*thumbsup*
PLEASE EXCUSE PAYING MY RESPECTS...
