It can motivate you to strive hard to look and sound good every time you pick the horn up. It can make you pick those knees up a little higher, kick (flash) on 8 a little higher, hit a little harder, and play a little louder. You can have a well-rehearsed band and get by, but pride in your organization will take you over the top.
On the flip side...you have to have some substance behind that pride. Some bands, or band members, may have a period of success, which builds their pride, but then it gets to the point where that pride gets in the way. You think you've "made it." You start missing practices or giving half the effort you could because you're thinking that your "pride" or "swagger" can carry you through, and you try to "turn it on" at the performance. But you can't turn it on, because you didn't practice that way.
A lot of kids that I teach have too much of the wrong type of pride, and it shoots us in the foot at times.

I thought I'd see more responses to this thread by now. Are we lacking pride THAT MUCH? Whats happening to take the pride out, or is it something you have to have before you step in the door?
What is your band doing to build the right kind of pride? Are YOU proud to be in your band? Why or why not?
what i'm seeing is that band pride suffers when pride in self and abilities; and pride in craft are missing.
this superficial stuff that's being exhibited now has more to do with popularity than it does with pride.
the personal and musical integrity of bands is ooh so missing.
Theres no such thing as to much pride. Just don't be a jackass. If someone thinks they're good and that their band is good, thats cool. But if they start talkin about people, then their being irritating.
