  • I'm not a director, but I am SURE that ANY director will be happy with a program so long as the students are excelling, learning and having fun.
  • Well, there are the corps styles that will do a little variety, Like the one i'm in we still played a few hip songs, plus we played a lot of classic rock songs that everyone knows. Its all up to the director of what he/she wants to do. I would personally be happy with any band for the same reason as the dude above me said.
  • Yes, I could. Band programs are about music, played well - doesn't matter what the style is!
  • I like all music, and don't mind teaching it. I just don't like the idea of doing one show ALL year, even after contest/festival. But then get mad when you get the golf clap at the end of your show in week 9.

I can understand teaching what you "know" and teaching the right fundamentals, but don't bore your students and audience to tears, either.

I don't care if it's rock 'n roll, reggaeton, swing, or techno...if it jams, I want to play it...
  • Yea, I actually like some of these bands that will do half their shows corps style then switch to high stepping. The last band that I saw do this was Moss Point's band from mississippi. It was a couple of years ago though so I don't know if they do it like that.
  • I wouldnt mind. just because a band is corps doesnt mean that you cant play good music. I have seen some very entertaining corps style shows. Matter of fact, Im currently working on one for UIL. I think its all about presentation

I have 3 CB's who came from Moss Point. I never seen their band, but if those 3 are a representation of the program, they must be doing SOMETHING correct!!!
    Question for Directors
Do you think you could ever work and be happy at a corps-style band?
  • Quality instruction , discipline, being consistent , organized and good arrangements will help all types of music programs. It has helped us at Willowridge HS for twenty one years now. We perform both styles of marching being successful in both. Learn the fundamentals of marching and select music that is fun and entertaining but educational to all.
  • No I would not...Not to sound pro black but what we have going here as a show band director is really a movement, in if we stop now it's going to be erased from history. You can find books on corps style anywhere and the history, Show band Directors need to write more books on this style (I'm working on my book now) but anyway My answer to the question is NO I want be happy with a corps-style band...But I'm a big big Fan of corps-style...
  • If a director is hired to teach then thats what he needs to do, not a matter of if hes happy or not. Should have thought about that before calling himself a music educator. Teaching should excite you if you love it in the first place. If the BD isn't happy teaching corps, then he may not be happy teaching other styles of music beyond showstyle to you.
