Question to HSers about College Choices

Morning all,

This just sparked in my brain. Being that alot of us are doing some recruiting for our respective programs and schools, I want to know what do YOU look for when being recruited? What is it that catches your eye about a band program/institution that you have followed and hope to be a part of OR ones that you've never seen that surprise you?

I know some of us who are in college or alumni try and specify to you what to look for, but from your perspective, what is it that you want when searching for your college of choice?

  • MONEY MONEY MONEY
  • People say that money is the deciding factor but from the decisions that my peers made....and from the statements constantly made by high schoolers today I would have to say that this is a lie. If money was the determining factor then there would be major differences in SWAC conference bands.
  • I look more toward my interested section first (percussion/trombone) then i check their disceplene. I also listen to see what there musical style/level sounds like, last but not least i look at the field shows, my favorite thing about band is doing the field shows, drills more so than dance routines.
  • well, im currently a sophomore but ill go ahead:

    1. do they have my major? (political science or public affairs)

    2. are they giving out $?

    3. how good academically is the school?

    4. then i look at the band lmao

  • Things Most Kids Look For :

    1. Location
    • Many of us dont have the money to pay out of state fees
    • Most people dont want to travel too far

          2. Money

    • We're going to choose who ever offers the most money (reguardless of reputation most of the times)

          3. Band's Style

    • People usually will go with whats closest to the style of their high school ( you'll occasionally get the "lone ranger'")

          4. Intended Major

    • If we know School A's ___________ program sucks..we're going to skip out on it..

Appearances by bands always change kids minds. I live in Florida...so as you can guess i've seen FAMU and BCU. When ever they come around or we watch them perform you'll get kids to say " man.... i'm going to that school "  Now if a band like, say UAPB wanted to recruit  down here without appearing..these kids are going to be like " WTF is a UAPB ? " But appearances cost money. Perform for high school band kids as much as possible is key for bands.
