Racism Still exist (even when there are no white kids)

I had a talk with a teacher at my local High school about thier music situation and the fact that they have no band or music program. Last year they brought in a music teacher to teach choir. This teacher I talked to told me that this person could teach band too (but they wasn't very enthused about it). What got me was the fact that this teacher told me that the principal at said school did not want a marching band but wanted a Jazz band and an Mariachi band.....I did not graduate High school but I know better especially since I had past dealings with this school. Why, at a school that has the same racial make up as a Davis or Milby would they want to split up kids based on race. This is not new...and it is not just about the band program.....First....you don't have ANY music program really to speak of...but you want to start a Jazz and Mariachi band and your feeder schools don't have music yet? Also I have noticed that they plan things to fail especially when the kids involved are mostly balck (except sports they need that money!). The bad thing is the hispanic kids want a band too but the admin will find a way to try and make it an HISPANIC only deal with the token black kid. Almost every program there seem to have Token people just to make it alright, not to make things better.Second after almost 50 years in operation this school has never seen a prinipal of color. Ever. There are no white kids at this school and if there are every body knows all 5 of them. What the last 3 principals have done successfully is play the fears that hispanics and blacks have about each other, against each other to the point that almost each visible organization seems to be made up of 1 race! The principal there is an older white person which they seem to always hire who probably don't live in the city and may have only seen this many minorities at work, not at home. This is not an afront to any of the righteous white people in the district, but schools should not be ran based on race.People JOBS have been in jepordy because questions have been asked about the climate of the school and the way things were ran. Alumni (teachers) have come back to thier alma mater only to be cast aside and eventually leave the district alltogether.

  • If this is the truth then you (or whoever is in that school) and as many people that you can get together need to gather the evidence and go to the superintendent of the school district; if that doesn't work go above their heads. Get the community involved by starting a petition to get what you want and keep moving from there. Eventually you'll garner the media attention and escalate it to a legal matter if need be (no school district wants that) and you may get what you want. But always take the proper channels so that you're not at fault for any wrong doing.
  • This mess is deeply entrenched into the minds of all people involved and there have been some instances where people have had protest, but ultimately it is going to have to come from the black AND hispanic parents in the community (most of which have taken their kids elsewhere) they have purposely tried to keep as many Blacks away as possible. I honestly think that if they would hire an alum preferrably from the era AFTER FULL desegregation (try mid 80's) to be the head principal that the school would be alot better. The person there now was an area superintendent and under their reign all programs that wasn't sports ceased. so instead of complaining and making thier thoughts heard blacks packed up and left. Hispanics are there mostly now but They are starting to understand that they are not getting the same oppurtunities that their cousins get at other schools.
And the white person runs everything.
