South Carolina State University Trustees were informed yesterday that the school faces a $4 million shortfall, with plans to reduce the projected deficit including job terminations and potentially a move from its NCAA Division I membership.

Officials attributed losses to enrollment dropping by 500 students, and a $750,000 revenue drop in the school’s dining hall.

The university will meet Monday to discuss budget management solutions. Among those to be considered by SCSU President George Cooper will be cuts to vacant positions, layoffs and salary reductions. Trustee Maurice Washington initially suggested the move from NCAA Division I affiliation.

  • Wow

  • They can get through it. Jindal has taken more than that from GSU and SU and they just restructured and slimmed down on spending etc. They need to call GSU's Dr. Pogue and ask him what he did because he didn't have to fire anyone, dude is a genius and knows how to budget. They can make it but they just need to trim the fat and might need to go to a 4 day week and make Fridays half days to free up money. That's what GSU did. GSU also did furloughs etc.

  • I found the real problem...

  • We are doing a 4-day week too. I think if SU can make past this semester, we should be back on track next school year(unless Jindal strikes again).

  • Oh Jindal isnt finish lol

  • He better be because Obama wasn't playing when he was talking about how stupid it is to cut education.

  • The problem is the administration and they all should be slapped. Theres no real money flowing through the schools, its all tax money. When 90%+ of an institutions expenses are padded with money from the government, thats a problem.  If the school would teach to parents the value of saving for a childs education so that the child wont need financial aid, things would improve.

And where is Jindal supposed to get the money? Louisiana citizens dont want higher taxes and dingdongs like Cleo won't keep their little sticky hands out the pot.

  • Cleo is the least of problems. Louisiana has money but the entire state is ran like it's 1930. The financial structure of the state isn't set up correctly. I don't care how you put things. You should never cut education. We wonder why jobs won't come to the state. Education attracts jobs. If you cut education, your state will be considered a joke, like it is now. Corruption is the main culprit. Alumni need to give back more, that's a key factor for HBCU's. HBCU alum don't give back like they should. If the majority of alum give back to each of their schools at least 100 dollars per year that would help. 100 dollars is nothing per year.

SCSU Faces $4 Million Budget Deficit; Jobs, Div I NCAA Membership Among Suggested Cuts

  • I agree with that club....100 dollars is nothing. I think if every alumni gives 100 dollars a year, that would go a long way.
  • The thing is OTHER schools don't have to worry about this kind of thing because they receive full financial support from the state. Over at USC, just 45 minutes away from SCSU, they don't have to worry about budget deficits. the costs for their school isn't funded by the students' tuition like at SCSU because the state throws money at them...

    hmmm...

but why would you fund one school religiously and continuously cut funds to another?

would it have anything to do with SCSU being an HBCU?

you bet your ass it does...
