  • take all that you have learned from your past section leaders and multiply it, and just be yourself, and be confident and you'll be fine
  • Just take everthing one step at a time. Set a goal and aim higher. It gonna be hard. You'll have to settle disputes, teach your section, and learn how to lead them effectively. You have to be stern at times but be open to how your section handles things and be careful. As a leader you will have to perform under pressure. After all that's most likely why you where picked to be a leader in the first place. Through this, you'll will be looked up to as a leader and set an example by growing as a musician (this includes theory and performance). Sometimes you'll have to be the bad guy and disipline your section when they mess up but that just comes with the territory. Band is business and as a leader you have no room for friends when is time to handle your business. Much respect and luck to you. Peace.

  • A few tips are:
    1. Maintain your composure at all times, even when your section is not performing at 100%. It shows strength and character.

    2. Be yourself. Too many people try to imitate others. If you are a class clown, dont try to become strict all of a sudden. Instead use your humor to make your section fun and enjoyable. If you are serious person, then your section will be serious.

    3. Get tight with your band director. Its not kissing a$$. Your director will help you out with any questions you may have.

    4. The past section leaders may have been good but hey they are the past, you are the present. Take a few things that they may have done well and use them but remember what you didnt like about them. Try to avoid their same mistakes.

Thats all I can thik of right now. But congrats on your new position and I really commend you for sharing this with us. A lot of leaders become arrogant and refuse to ask for advice. I wish you and your program a successful year
  • along with what everyone else said...

your ultimate goal as section leader is to make your section better than you
so that after you leave you know that your section will be in good hands and that it won't diminish just because you are not there. leave a legacy so that when you return years later to check on things, you can see that your section is as disciplined and on point as if you were still leading them
