Ok...im starting to get confused about these terms..some people say cranking..and some people say yanking...i live in Atl most of us use the term cranking...some of us are under the impression that cranking...is playing loudly...but sometimes when i hear most of the people on here(bandhead) use the term..they mean it as in the dipping movement of the horn..ive used the term "jerking" because im not sure how to identify it...ive never used the term "yanking"....but whatever floats your boat...so..my question is....is their a difference between cranking and yanking or are they the same thing???...and if they are the same can you "crank" without "cranking"..meaning can you play loud without dipping the horn and STILL be considered "cranking"..other than slight dips of the horn used to take deep breaths...for ex... in the clip below...are they "cranking"..or are they just simply playing loud??

Cranking is playing with raised volume....
Yanking is bring the horn up and down and up and down to "try" and crank. Some people over due and makes them look stupid.Bringing your horns up to extreme angles just to bring it down and blow....it actually takes away from the sound.
Its different when you take a deep breath, and your diaphragm expands, which NATURALLY raises your arms.
In that video....you can classify it as cranking....that Shaw High school video you up (i think)....the btones were yanking to try and crank (even though they put out a loud sound)....it don't call for all that YANKING.

Positive: if everyone is doing it at the same time, it is uniform and becomes apart of a bands character. also it can be intimidating if there is actual volume coming with the look. Lol
Negative: people have the misconseption that if you arent yanking then you probably arent blowin which is not the case. My high school band director wanted us to look uniform in everything we do because you never know who is watching. He use to always tell us that you can do all the yanking that you want, all the pullin that you need, but to a def person, you still look like an ass. Appeal to all that might see you.
Cranking has to do with volume, intensity. Yanking(pullin, humpin, cockin, slashin) has to do with the actual movement of the horn.
And just saying...cranking isn't bad...ignorant cranking is bad...
Yanking is cool to an extent...For example, this is yanking that actually looks good and uniform (notice Baritones)
ignorant anything is bad
unorganized chaos.......smh....
