*STAMINA*...ALL COLLEGE PPL ADVICE NEEDED ..PLZ HELP

ive been playing tbone since da 6th grade and im now a junior at smhs...im trying to attend Jackson state university fall 2012... alot of our alumni attends jsu and i think keeping the feeder chain going will help guide me through some stuff as far as motivation to make it to college.... ok back to the subject.... when i play my horn or when i crank for a long period of time my lips give out so i frequently have to stop and squeeze them in the middle of a long song, if not ill crack notes.....especially in cold conditions. im trying to build my stamina before i reach college level....so what can i do to keep the gas tank full.. are there any exercises or technique that will help me eliminate this issue??? .

  • Long Tones......Lip slurs.....Long Tones with constant volume. It just comes with time....im sure your stamina has gotten better since u first picked up your horn....if you think you are prepared enough, prepare some more...
  • I don't know if this applies to trombone, but I play tuba and I've been told that to increase your stamina you should practice the control of your air. We usually think fast air = louder, but that's not always the case. Practice playing loud and relaxed. Apply as little pressure to the mouthpiece as possible. Doing so increases the amount of blood flowing to the lips. When you apply pressure to the mouthpiece it causes blood to stop flowing to your lips, making them swell. This is bad embrasure/endurance wise. As far as exercises, I've started jogging and doing lots of different ab exercises. It helps a great deal. One other thing would be to play controlled and realize that you're in a section and you don't have to sound like 2-3 people. As long as you're playing within the dynamic level you can control and a fat tone, you should be fine.
  • OMG! Sounds like another case of horn abuse, improper warming up and bad embrasure... Clearly you are trying to play too loud, outside of the natural realms of musicality. 1st off you will need to have your tone when you audition (Im assuming they test you, ionno, no SWAC hours here). Learn your scales, find your embrasure so your tone will be great at auditions... pass auditions and worry about the blastissmo techniques when you arrive at band camp. They’ll teach (show) you all the secret techniques for playing an instrument loud and somewhat in tune when you get there.
  • long tones...lip slurs like stated above...buzz ur lips wen ur not playing...use ur diaphragm muscles instead of pressure on the horn...this should help...some ppl jus need to blow through the pain...let the notes crack...then try again...which ever applies.
  • thanx alot yall.....bout time sumbody really answered my questions.lol
  • its embouchure bruh....

  • "Cranking"...lol

May I ask, why is cranking so important? I guess as a woodwind player, I will never understand. But even when I pick up a baritone or trumpet, the urge to "blow and crank" to the point where my lips want to fall off never really hit me.

    ~shrugs~

Oh and to build your stamina, may I suggest calisthenics? Along with producing the sound you want, you gotta be able to march while producing that sound.

  • i know some ppl frown at the terminology "cranking"..but yes...i cant sit here and lie and say i dont do it..nor do i think its a bad thing... we are all individuals who have different ways of expressing there emotions...there are different styles of playing...not to say "cranking" is the only thing i know...cus i promise you its not...its just something i like to do..i consider it as a reward..a god given gift...

  • Don't get me wrong...I get the emotion, and the intensity. But yeah, you are right. I kinda frown on the term because it makes me think of blatant blowing, with no kind of regard for the music that is supposed to be played.

I'm glad that you realize that it's not ONLY about cranking.
