BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Several Southern University students face criminal charges after an alleged band hazing incident that sent two band members to the hospital.
One of those charges is for ritualistic acts. Prosecutor Prem Burns with the East Baton Rouge District Attorney's Office explains what that means and says she's never tried a case quite like this. "It's rare when you hear of it being prosecuted," she says.
Louisiana's current ritualistic acts law has been in place since 1989, but since then, Burns says she has never heard of a case involving a beating with 2x4 wooden boards. That's what happened in this case, according to a police warrant. "Usually, it involves sacrifice, thinking devil worship. That's normally what first comes to mind."
Burns is not yet involved in prosecuting the Southern band members' alleged hazing incident, so she only talked about the unusual law. "So, if somebody has been tortured and hurt to a severe degree, proven by medical injuries as part of an initiation; it's pretty simple to prove." Penalties for ritualistic acts can range anywhere from five to 25 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Because of that, Burns says hazing cases in Louisiana have actually declined. "Throughout the country, people realize this is not acceptable."
Deputies are still investigating the southern case. Once it's complete, the East Baton Rouge District Attorney's Office will likely handle it.

Nah, just seems like the law wasn't set up to necessarily include hazing. There are only two parts of the actual Ritualistic Acts Law that seem to include what might be considered hazing.
This is just overboard what these men did.... That D.A. will definitely make an example of the 7. This is just what people have been waiting for, publicized black on black beatings. The best thing SU can do is expel the 7 and let “the system” handle this to keep the University clear. This being an off-campus crime is a plus for SU. But I pray for any black man that gets caught up in Louisiana’s system of so-called justice.
JENA 6 and other cases are still on white folks minds. This isn’t going to be swept under any rugs outside of Southern.

i pray for yall man...the 7 people and the two dudes.cuz really it aint nobody fault.the hazey is just as guilty as the hazer!and thats what many people dont read in the rules.the 7 not just gonna be in trouble the boys are too once they are well(and i pray yall get well)Cuz really its not something you have to do!but nobody likes to be a quiter so they accept the beating and try to MAN UP about it,anyone at anytime couldve said"look, thats enough" even the guys getting hazed.but its not just at SU its everywhere..times just have finally caught up with SU.but soon other bands will b exposed, bands you wouldve never thought hazed (those bands you dont hear about)!!!but i wonder how this will effect SU numbers in the future for everyone know "mothers" will not tolerate their son/daughter goin to a college their first year where hazing is factor.HOWEVER,like i said...its not only SU...other bands just have yet to have been exposed or by the grace of God have been doing a good job keeping it on the low.but i hate how they are raising this huge issue on us black folks...WE all know them "other" bands (if u know what i mean) make their freshman go through some crazy stuff!!!but believe that they WANT and probably WILL make an example out of these kids because the media cant wait to exploid us black folks on crime. WE pray for yall SU especially us...da WORLD FAMED cuz without ONE of us....there is no classic!!! it takes TWO!!! i hope for the best and i pray yall band dont get suspended! peace!
my prayers go to the su program. if you did it and you got caught hazer and hazee then thats yo dumb *ss fault. should've excersised better judgement. but i hope that this doesn't get too much attetention because it will shine a negative light on the entire school as well as other hbcu's. so good luck with your troubles su.
