I think Southern has been making that transition to playing with a cleaner, more balanced sound while keeping that aggressive attitude. Hopefully it continues as the years come and go.
2005 was an excellent year, and probably the best SU band from the 2000's
2006 was a good year, and was also a transition year with a larger band and a new director. Best drilling band by far of the 2000's.
2007 was better than 2006, but just had some problems with one section playing clean and together until late in the year.
2008 was by far better than 2006 and 2007, and was one of the better sounding SU bands in a while. Would be in contention for the best of the 2000's title from SU alongside 2004 and 2005.
So far it seems to be a good start for most SWAC bands (I say "most" because I haven't heard them all yet). But let's see how things are late in the season, when fatigue and old bad habits start to set in (I hope they don't).
Yes I do agree that the quality of the sound is overall increasing in the swac. From Alcorn to GSU to AlSU. The bands that stick out to me in sound quality is AAMU, UAPB, and PV! I think that the top, four as far as sound, bands in the SWAC today TxSU(based on this year), JSU, AAMU, and SU....I chose these(in no order) because they display an ability to play with quality while keeping that SWAC power! Other bands are doing well to but im purely speaking on sound quality along with power consistently.
